Florida Officials Who Banned Guns Prior to Hurricane May Soon Pay for Their ‘Error’

The five-member Okeechobee, Florida city council and Police Chief Donald Hagan may each be forced to pay $5,000 personally – without using taxpayer dollars – for violating Florida’s powerful preemption statute, which only allows the state legislature to regulate firearms.

As previously reported, the city adopted an illegal ordinance shortly before Hurricane Helene made landfall, which banned the sale of guns and ammunition and prohibited firearm possession in public by anyone other than law enforcement or members of the military.

  1. Burn 'em. One good example will seriously inhibit the rest. Everyone is saying 5 grand is no big deal. Trust me, when it's out of your personal pocket, it is a huge frickin' deal. Don't believe me? OK, go light a hundred dollar bill. See how that feels.
And they're guilty as hell. No excuses, ignorance of the law doesn't cut it, no intent to enforce doesn't either. Ordinance passed and signed, guilty by definition just as the law says. At a guess, somebody will reimburse under the table. Still not taxpayer money. And the fright will have been delivered.

    1. 5k is no big deal for those type of people. The 5k would be acceptable if it also included permanent removal from office and loss of any "retirement" benefits.
Or hang them in public as an example to others that may try to violate their oath of office ("protect and defend the Constitution")
Yep - I find myself more and more in favor of elimination rather than reformation.

    2. Castrate the city attorney, strip him of his license and fine him $5 million for not having them arrested on the spot. Send a message to the bar that they have a duty to the American People.

  3. Too bad it isn't $5k per instance that their illegal ordinance was cited by law enforcement to someone.

  11. " without using taxpayer dollars"

I believe their salary is paid using taxpayer dollars but I suppose they could use some of their bribe money to pay the fine.

  12. They'll never pay a dime. Some judge will rule that Florida Carry lacks standing and the matter will disappear.
