Somebody give Mike a medal

REDLANDS, Calif. (KCAL/KCBS) - An off-duty California deputy risked his life to save a child as a train quickly approached a car stuck on the railroad tracks. The dramatic moments were caught on video.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Castaneda made a split-second decision to run in front of a moving train to save the life of a child on a rural road in Redlands. Cell phone video shows Castaneda picking up the child as the train comes dangerously close to them.

  2. At least he was off-duty. If it wasn't for that Kalifornia would have to defund him.

  4. I guess that this must be more of that "toxic masculinity" that they keep whining about.

  5. Just up the road in San Timeteo canyon I was crossing the tracks in our Vega and it bottomed out and got stuck. It was popular place for dirt bike riding and the family was in the car. By unloading everyone it was just enough to clear. Could have been bad news if a train had come along.

    1. It's been just about that long, since the were Vega was around, that I drove over the featured crossing. A bit more recent, 25 years, since I drove San Timeteo Canyon Rd and the crossing up to the cemetery.

  6. Guys, or gals, like this is the reason that I hate it when people condemn the police in the country. Because I still would like to believe that a huge % of the cops out there are good, decent people who are willing to risk their lives to save others.
I will however place blame on leadership for a lot of the bad press that the police get. I think of the Uvalde shooting where the police leadership on scene would not let officers enter the classroom where the shooter had barricaded himself, and was still shooting students while the police stood by outside the room, in a hallway. They even stopped at least one officer from assaulting the room by physically restraining him.
The sad thing is, I kind of think that the leadership might willingly allow shootings to happen, in order to gain more public support for anti gun legislation. Perhaps that is the cynic in me.
