Woman kicked out of casino for not having her service dog

RENO, Nev. (KOLO/Gray News) – A woman in Nevada was recently kicked out of a casino for not having her service dog.

Heather Vanus said she’s been a regular at the Nugget Casino resort in Reno for the last three years.

She and her medical dog Cherry will visit the casino some weeks up to four or five times a week. Cherry is trained to alert Vanus if she’s about to have a seizure.

Uh-huh. Now let me tell you what I think happened.
She tried taking her dog into the casino the first time and the casino objected because no pets are allowed, so she claimed it was a service animal and her well being depended on it. The casino relented because it wasn't a battle worth fighting and losing. But the first time she came in without the dog..... well, she was told to leave because the casino didn't want to take a chance on her seizing up in the casino and hurting herself. After all, she said herself that her well being depended on the dog, right?
In other words, two can play that game.

  1. I agree with your assessment, Ken. It's a good thing Heather's white or there'd be a racist complaint added to the bitch mix.

    1. Same here. Every service dog I've ever seen is wearing something (vest, collar) that clearly ID's them.
Way she was playing in the park struck me as more a pet than service animal.

    2. Sadly, there is a big market for registering and outfitting "service dogs". Just because a dog is wearing the appropriate vest doesn't mean it has been properly trained as a service dog.

  2. So, she has a seizure disorder, so she goes into a place with lots and lots of flashing lights?

  4. She needs a back-up service animal - like a miniature horse, or a pig.

  5. Once handicapped parking permits were the biggest scam backed by our great government bureaucracy. But service animals has surpassed and become an even bigger scam. It's the same kinds of people so I would bet that most people with service animals also have a handicapped parking permit too.

  6. You're likely right, but there's nothing that prevents her medical condition from changing or being handled by a different medication, that might make using a service dog unnecessary or at least less necessary. The casino may be in hot water anyway.

  8. Big clue, the dog just got fixed. A pregnant dog would be a serious problem, and a nursing mother can't very well be gone all day.

  9. The security folks f’d up. Her dog was recovering from surgery. She had her service human. My former girlfriend was epileptic. She would have “auras” that alerted her to an oncoming seizure and she’d tell me. Although it’s nice to have a seizure alert dog, it’s not required.
