Around here a working man's bar is a hole in the wall, maybe not a shit kicker but definitely not fancy... Anyway hope your 1st week back was good for you JD
It may have been a hole in the wall at first, I don't know, but I didn't start going there until the 1980s during the Urban Cowboy thing we all hated so much.
Been in Oakdale a number of times, though am not familiar with the H-B Saloon. I am VERY familiar with a place up the road a piece. The Magnolia Bar next door to the Hotel Jefferey in Coulterville. Similar kind of place.
Considering the photographic kit available then, the results are so sharp and just capture the moment. One of my favourites was O. Winston Link. His depictions of the last days of steam on US railroads is wonderful. A sadly neglected genius.

It was actually a pretty nice place when I was going there. Nothing fancy, but not a hole in the wall either.
DeleteOh ok, maybe the black and white photo gives it that look....

It was and most likely still is a working man's bar.
DeleteThat's the best kind!

What game are they playing?
ReplyDelete"Shootin' dice for drinks at the H-B Saloon."
ReplyDeleteIf that isn't a line in a real county song, it oughta be.
Are they playing liars dice?

It's on the main drag, F Street, about a block east of the railroad tracks there on the right hand side.
DeleteWait, seriously fucked or seriously fucked up?

Much of Link's beloved Abingdon Branch (of the N&W Railroad), now a hiking / biking trail, was washed out in Hurricane Helene.
DeleteIs that Lech Walesa there in the middle?
