    1. It was actually a pretty nice place when I was going there. Nothing fancy, but not a hole in the wall either.

    3. It was and most likely still is a working man's bar.

    5. It may have been a hole in the wall at first, I don't know, but I didn't start going there until the 1980s during the Urban Cowboy thing we all hated so much.

  3. "Shootin' dice for drinks at the H-B Saloon."
If that isn't a line in a real county song, it oughta be.

  6. Been in Oakdale a number of times, though am not familiar with the H-B Saloon. I am VERY familiar with a place up the road a piece. The Magnolia Bar next door to the Hotel Jefferey in Coulterville. Similar kind of place.

    1. It's on the main drag, F Street, about a block east of the railroad tracks there on the right hand side.

  8. Considering the photographic kit available then, the results are so sharp and just capture the moment.
One of my favourites was O. Winston Link. His depictions of the last days of steam on US railroads is wonderful. A sadly neglected genius.

    1. Much of Link's beloved Abingdon Branch (of the N&W Railroad), now a hiking / biking trail, was washed out in Hurricane Helene.
