Gene Hackman, wife found dead in Santa Fe home; no foul play suspected
Legendary actor, two-time Oscar winner and author Gene Hackman and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, were found dead Wednesday afternoon in their home in the Santa Fe Summit community northeast of the city.
Gets down to almost freezing at night in Albuquerque area, so perhaps faulty heating exhaust and CO poisoning. Sad. At least CO poisoning - you just drift off to a permanent sleep

It was a driving force in normalizing "bad cop-crazy cop" dynamics that spread to the whole of this great nation.
He moves from 'my favorite living actor' to 'my favorite dead one.' Reportedly, he was very difficult to work with, but once you saw him on the screen, there was nobody better.
Very true. There are some big name actors today whose talents I best describe as saying 'such and such actor is never going to make you forget you're watching such and such actor at work'. Hackman was the opposite. Gene Hackman disappeared when he was doing a character. He was quite the talent.
My first thought was CO2 also. But no. Found by msintenance workers, they were mummified, estimated gone 2 weeks, he was found down in a mudroom, and she was in a bathroom with pills scattered about. GSD dead in a closet. 2 other dogs alive.
My two favorite films of his (not saying best, just my favorites) are Uncommon Valor and The Conversation. Any number of other films of his are excellent as well, but those two just do it for me.

ReplyDeleteHe was a gifted actor. Seemed like a humble guy. RIP for what appears to be a tragic end.
ReplyDeleteHackman lied about his age to enlist USMC at age 16 and served as a China Marine during the Communist take-over there.
