Back over 50 years ago when I was employed by a Bell System company using a ladder to climb a pole was verboten. Strap on your hooks, body belt and go or you got a kick in the ass from the boss.
My first encounter with OSHA was seeing an inspector hog tied and hanging from the rafters by his ankles. He'd tried to cite a guy who was building his own home for child labor because his kids were there.
I used to install cable TV from the pole to the house. Only time used the heavy ass ladder was if I had to pull a mid span. Then those hooks on the ladder came in handy. I think I used the ladder on a pole one time, but that was because the pole was so chewed up, I kept 'gaffing' out. Couldn't climb the pole for love nor money.

DeleteI've done some pole work. Communication lines are always down low, electrical lines are up above.
Deletebog; I knew a guy who slid down a pole that was full of splinters. After that he used a ladder and got fired.
