Tennessee Bill would prohibit doctors from asking about firearm ownership

In an effort to protect the constitutional rights of gun owners in Tennessee, lawmakers have filed a bill that would prohibit healthcare providers from asking patients if they own firearms.

The bill, filed by Rep. Ed Butler (R-Rickman), is intended to protect the rights of Tennesseans who seek medical care from being “discriminated against,” according to the lawmaker.

Meh. Mine and Lisa's doctor has never asked either of us about gun ownership and the first time I'd ever seen her outside of her office, she was in our local gunshop with her husband.

  1. Didn't need a law here in NH. Everyone owns guns, no point in asking.

  2. I was asked, once, "Do you have any guns at home?" I answered, "Hell, I have one in your office."

    1. money quote from part 2:
Them: “Is there anyone who makes you feel unsafe at home?”

Me: “Well, the last time someone made me feel unsafe in my home, I killed them.”

Them: “Ok, the doctor will be with you shortly”

  4. Sometimes a provider might ask me if there are hazards in my house or similar type open ended things on a questionnaire. I often answer yes. Then, when they ask me I try to excitedly tell them about my garage and all the cool things it has. Flammables or things that could explode. Poisons and toxins. Tools that can cut a digit clean off. Etc. Plus I live on a hill and could fall right off. Then we all have a chuckle and move on to the medical stuff.

  5. During my annual physical the doctor asked me if there were any firearms in my house.
Me: You don't strike me as being a gun kind of guy. Why do you want to know?
Doctor: The new medical laws (Obamacare) dictate that I ask.
Me: Well, you've done your job.

  6. Long before Obamacare the pediatrician that WAS the primary the nurse asked about any firearm in the house and my response was "That has nothing to do with my child's health. You are not to ask any of my children that question." After two more questions they asked me to leave the room so they could speak privately with my oldest dughter. I told them " You are never to speak to any of my children witout either my wife or I present" She looked offended and I told her to document that on the outside of the file folder. Needless to say we found a new primary after that. The new one was told up front this and had no problem with it

  9. Asked my doctor about this and he replied "no, why would I ask that?" Then he pulled out his phone and showed me a photo of the full auto M16 he had recently purchased. Turns out he has had a Class 3 license for years.

  11. Just because they ask doesn't mean you have to answer. And if they insist it would be prudent to find another doctor who is more interested in medicine than politics...and tell them that.

  13. What ever happened to the physician/patient confidentiality that used to be the norm? Even before HIPAA rules, doctors didn't talk about their patients outside of the office.

  15. Yearly "Mental check" here in MI. Nurse applies. last year nurse asked, answer was no, doc came in, we talked about deer hunting. This year nurse asked, answer was no, doc came in, I told him I just got CPL, convo ensued. Lie on the forms, the rest is optional as to fit your doc.

  16. The wife and I were in a rough patch and went to see a counselor. We had joint meetings, and one on ones w/ the shrink. He asked about hobbies, I mentioned shooting sports, and got peppered constantly w/ questions about suicide?
Honestly, I think it's a fetish among leftists, but I'd digress...

  18. Daughter took grandsons to clinic for annual checkups. Nurse separated mom from little guys. Suspicious mom tracked down her sons. Nurse was asking little guys about guns in the house; how many, are they always locked up, bullets too, gun/hunting magazines? Daughter blew up, thoroughly dressed down nurse. Nurse begged for mercy. Said she agreed with daughter but the state mandated the gun questions. Turns out the state also demanded answers about seat belts, bicycle helmets...
