War has a way of creating legends, but a few stories of heroism rival the greatest fiction. In the heart of the Vietnam War, wounded, outnumbered, and facing impossible odds, one man, Roy Benavidez, defied death itself—again and again. His actions would earn him the Medal of Honor and a place in military history.
I was in Viet Nam (Army Huey flight crew) in 1969 & 1970. Roy Benavidez was a legend even then. Anytime someone went wild while attacking NVA or Viet Cong, they were said to be going MAD MEX on them. This was a reference to Roy Benavidez and was meant as a high compliment.
ReplyDeleteI had the honor of meeting Master Sergeant Benavidez a few years before he died. If anyone deserves to have an Army base named after them, he does.
