His name was Alferd, not Alfred. A cafeteria in CU Boulder was named after Alferd Packer.
ReplyDeleteI've seen it spelled both ways, but his gravestone as well as a plaque there says his name was Alfred. Findagrave.com says 'His name is often misspelled as "Alferd", an error that stems from his own illiteracy.'

DeleteIf you're ever in a severe survival situation, you may wrestle with the question of whether to eat your fellow man (or woman). Just remember, no matter how much justification you may think you have, forever more, whenever you walk into a room, everyone will stop talking and look at you.
ReplyDeleteOne person will whisper to another, "Is that . . . "
And the other will answer, "Yes . . . Wirecutter . . . THE CANNIBAL."
Meat's meat, Pilgrim.
DeleteI thought the ending would be "I thought that was Alfred. Not Alferd"
DeleteSounds like the setup to the old joke, "Do they call me Alfred the housebuilder?"
Delete"Noooo, they don't call you that."
"But you eat just one human ..."
I'm assuming it's like pork and you wanna cook it well done.

ReplyDeleteI love the quote from the judge after his trial, “There was only seven Democrats in Hinsdale County, and the sonofabitch ate five of them”!
