This is a bit different than my normal fare, but if you are a dog lover, or just someone who values a keen insight into human nature and the love of a true friend, read on. I hope you enjoy it.
In 1869 or 1870, a farmer in rural Missouri shot and killed “Old Drum,” the favorite hunting dog of one of his neighbors. Old Drum’s owner sued. He hired a local lawyer, George Vest, to speak for him and Old Drum.

Truer words were never spoken.
ReplyDeleteIt's allergy season my eyes are watery
ReplyDeleteNothing comparesa to a dog's loyalty.
...but what was the jury's verdict?
ReplyDeleteDusty. Very dusty in here.
ReplyDeleteRoger that! All the above.
ReplyDeleteIn the same vein. Rudyard Kipling https://poets.org/anthology/power-dog-collection-poems
ReplyDeleteHmmmm.....,my love for me dogs(and all four footed family members)would have resulted with one less farmer in Missouri.....,just saying.
ReplyDeleteI've tried to read this at my dogs' funerals, but can't ever seem to get past the first sentence. Now I play Ronald Reagans reciting this from Death Valley Days.

Dam, I get the same reaction and I too hope I can be the person my dogs thinks i am. But as a warning, I love my dog/dogs thru life one and all more than most people and my reaction if this happened to my dog would not be to go to our no justice system. It would be Old testament biblical revenge on the person and their worthless spawn. Wipe them out, burn their homes and salt the ground so no life will ever return. Just saying....
ReplyDeleteI agree. You mess with me and I'll fight back. You mess with my dogs and they won't find your body.
DeleteOld Drums owner was a better man than me, or maybe not. i would have killed someone, and would have been happy to do it. i have 3 now and have always had dogs, and will happily send anyone to Hell if they hurt any one on purpose.
ReplyDeleteThe bag of treats just got lighter. Buddy approves !

Beautiful words. Our last dog was Gemma, an English Springer Spaniel. Broke our hearts when she passed. We are too old and both have mobility issues and we decided not to get another dog as would struggle to care for it (plus, my darling wife could not bare to go through that again). Instead, we are "Grand parents" to our friends that have dogs, which is a lot of fun!
ReplyDeleteOld Blue, You Good Dog You....
ReplyDeleteShoot my dog? There won't be any lawyers involved but there will be a death under mysterious circumstances in the coming months.
ReplyDeleteMy son's dog died the other day. This was my tribute to her. "So Ziva, the funny, smart, goofy, beautiful, BEST ZIVA IN THE WORLD!! crossed the Rainbow Bridge this evening.
ReplyDeleteI never met a more chill, easy-going dog like her. I think, in the 9 or so years she was here, I may have heard her bark fewer than 10 times.
I'm so glad John, Lily, and Faithann rescued her when they did.
I never really owned a dog of my own. Ziva wasn't mine either, but we spent many weekends together. I never truly understood the connection people have with their dogs, cats, birds, gerbils.... whatevers. To me it was 'just' a pet. Until today. As I sat in the yard, shivering as the sun went down, watching this poor girl take her last breath, I felt something I never really felt before. The loss, the pain, the understanding that I'll never hear those toenails clicking down the hall, or the thump of that tail on the floor again. And it hurts.
There's this great big Ziva-sized hole in our lives that we will need to come to terms with, eventually. Until that day happens, I'll just be thankful that I got to know and love one of God's best creations. And her name is Ziva."
