"The Bomber Boys” is a gripping documentary exploring the high-stakes air war over Europe during World War II. Through first-hand accounts, rare archival footage, and detailed narration, it chronicles the harrowing missions of the RAF Bomber Command and the U.S. 8th Air Force.
From early daylight raids to the brutal air battles of “Big Week,” these young men faced staggering odds to cripple Nazi Germany’s war machine.
This film honors their courage, sacrifice, and enduring brotherhood, shedding light on how their dominance in the skies paved the way for the D-Day invasion and ultimate Allied victory.

My high school math teacher was a B-25 radioman and door gunner. We had math class after lunch. He had a liquid lunch most days. I learned all about his missions where we heard about the 25th mission every few months. I had a math tutor all through HS to learn HS math.
ReplyDeleteHad a Junior High School math teacher who survived the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served on the USS Nevada. At least once a week, someone would derail the class lesson by asking a question about WWII.
DeleteHad a Father-in-Law who was a B-17 pilot in the 710th Bomb Squadron, 447th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 8th Air Force.
ReplyDeleteDidn't talk much about it.
The postmaster of the little town I grew up in flew 50 missions as a tail gunner in a B-24 in WWII.

"I just did what they told me, and it always worked out. I found myself doing things I would never have thought of myself."
RIP, Mr. Pauly. You are gone but not forgotten.
I am fortunate enough to have my late fathers' mission diary from his service as a B17 co-pilot, including the final mission wherein his planevwas shot full of german 88s, killing the tail gunner, the parachuting from 25000', landing just a few hundred yards behind the spearpoint of the allied advance, getting shuffled back to his base.
ReplyDeleteIncredible stories, incredible men.
8th Air Force lost more men than the Marine Corps did during the war
ReplyDeleteGoogle up the "bomber maffia" and the P-38 Lightning fighter.
DeleteThe standard WW Twice narrative that American bomber fleets could not be escorted by long ranger fighters all the way to target until the P-51;s with drop tanks were available is a lie. The Bomber generals clique repeatedly killed all attempts in development and wartime production of the P-38 to have it equipped with drop tanks that would have allowed a good long range fighter to go all the way to most targets with the bombers.
This just makes me so proud to be an American.
ReplyDeleteMy dad was a waist gunner on a B-17. Flew in the missions over Ploesti. Never talked much about it.
ReplyDelete5'8" 140 pounds. They woulda made me a ball turret gunner. Ida joined the Marines n fought in a mudhole before I let that happen. Absolutely terrifying prospect.
ReplyDeletewell, my dad changed his last name a bit and joined the navy because he didn't want to wear a tie. no shit. he hated ties. dave in pa.
