Florida Man takes on a bison

A Florida man is alive after being gored Sunday by a bison in Yellowstone National Park, park officials report.

At about 3:15 in the Lake Village area of the park, a bison gored a 47-year-old Cape Coral, Florida, man after he approached it too closely, says a Wednesday statement by the Yellowstone National Park’s public affairs office.

  1. They have an app to tell you how far to stay away from a bear?! Darwin is not active enough! The race needs a big time purging!

  5. In a healthy society we'd corral miscreants and the terminally stupid and charge modest admission for folks to watch them thrown to bison, alligators, lions, revolving doors, roundabouts and parallel parking scenarios. Instead, we permit them in high office and managerial positions.

  6. When I visited Yellowstone as a child in the 1960s, there was a poster showing a picture of a guy who had just had his arm ripped off by a grizzly, with blood still spurting from the stump. According to the poster, he was feeding some marshmallows to the bear, and decided the bear had had enough for now. The bear disagreed, and the guy didn't survive the argument.

    1. Maybe that can be the new TicTok challenge to thin the herd! [pun intended]

There was an extra stupid one, pet the moose, a few years ago, and a colored kid visiting Alaska found out the hard way that it wasn’t a good idea.

  8. We really shouldn't need signs like Don't approach the wildlife but seems like we do....

    1. Yellowstone was a bucket list item of mine since I was a kid. Finally got to visit a few years ago. I was continually amazed at how close tourists would get to extremely large wild animals, in spite of all the warnings posted, well, EVERYWHERE! The worst two standouts:

#1 - A woman literally pushed her way past a bison cow standing on the boardwalk. (yeah, it was a cow vs cow incident). All while the other visitors were telling her to stop. The bull was twenty feet away and showed strong signs of protecting his harem. The human cow was lucky and got away with being a fool.

#2 - Traffic had stopped as there was a moose in the road. Several cars back a man got out and walked to within ten feet of the moose to take pictures. In two steps the moose could have taken him out. Again, the fool was lucky and got away with it.

Given the number of violations of basic rules of survival I saw that week it's my guess that the majority of fools get away with their foolery. Probably because Darwin is stumping for a raise.

  10. I thought that petting the big, fluffy puppies was a chick thing. Did he at least get a decent pre-goring selfie?

  11. Evolution in action.

We have a small bison preserve down south a bit...Every now and then some jackass gets gored.

There is NO SUCH THING as a bison with a happy disposition. They are NOT happy fluffy cows: Cows have been bred to be docile and stupid for a few thousand years. Bison are not.

  13. IMO . . . The lowest common denominator should be allowed to pursue their happiness. Removing the weakest from the gene pool benefits society. May the Darwin Awards exceed the Oscars, Emmys, and all the useless award shows Darwin improves the breed.

  14. I generally make my first visit of the year to Yellowstone the first weekend of May. Did so again this year. I'll probably go again before June and probably won't visit again until October unless we have guests that need to be hauled into the park. The quote about stupid people in large groups is overly evident most of the summer season. I once saw someone trying to place their child atop a bison for a picture. That's not just stupid but criminally stupid. Bison caused injury was one of the top ten causes for visits to the Cody Hospital Emergency room back when they were the primary care hospital for the park. Now I think they haul them all to Idaho Falls.

  15. Okay class, once more;
    Water is wet
    Fire is hot
    Socialism doesn’t work, and
Bison need a lot of leaving-alone.

  19. I used to work the Wyoming oilfields back in the 70's-80's, always headed for the park on days off, the place is beyond beautiful. My favorite buffalo story was about a french tourist who was trying to get a good pic of a buffalo. The guy approached a bull who was laying down and kicked the buffalo so he could get a better pic of the buffalo standing up, BOOM...one pissed off bull buffalo and one dead arrogant french tourist. It still makes me laugh 40 years later.
