After a massive rain, neighbor and me decided to run the swollen river. He in a kayak, me on a surfboard. My neighbor had flipped the kayak and got separated.
A volunteer fireman on a bridge saw me sitting upright on my now submerged surfboard. Howdy doodie assumed the worst. Literally hell broke loose in the old coots head. He radioed for swift water rescue, EMTs, the whole lot.
I float around the last bend in the river to see a large crowd and firemen and ambulances. A team in wetsuits were gathered in a briefing. I casually walk out of the river, board under arm. I was rushed by a couple of medics wanting to check my vitals and so on. Until then I had no idea of the commotion. I had suspected something because I had recognized the man on the bridge. He was the stereotype clunky volunteer just dying to be the hero.
