I had a GSD mix who used to divebomb the couch in the living room, which was free-standing and not up against any wall. As a pup, it worked just fine, but once he passed the 75 pound mark (on the way to 115) he would sometimes hit hard enough to tip the couch over. Took an occasional kid or spindly old aunt with him. Miss that good old boy.
