#2 is a great example of the law of cosines. The tension he was putting on the rope was close to his weight divided by zero. When I learned about this application of the law of cosines in college, I had to try it for myself. The next time my buddy got his F250 High Boy stuck in the mud, we used 100' steel cable and a HD come-a-long. We would attach the 100' cable to a tree and then just get the cable tight with the come-a-long. We would then pull the truck forward 2 - 3 feet by pulling perpendicular to the cable at the center of the cable with our gloved hands. Then we would tighten the cable again with the come-a-long and then pull the center of the cable sideways again and get another 2 - 3 feet. We were the dividing sideways force we exerted by zero and what is anything divided by zero?
