#9- I just went to Amazon and there are tons of them for sale, of various styles. I bought one for $10 and it will be here tomorrow. And am I the only one who was stuck watching the very first gif for waaay too long?
Actually pretty simple in concept. Taking great big long hydrocarbon molecules (think, tar) and using hydrogen and a catalyst to make shorter ones (eg, gasoline) using pressure and heat to help things along.
A catalyst is something that helps the other stuff react but comes out the same as it went in so it can go around again.
And, yeah, the busted up smaller molecules do distill away from the bigger ones.
Now, the details ARE a bit messy with serious chemistry of several sorts, but unless you're one of the couple dozen guys who fuss with the details the above is about as good a level of understanding as most chemists - even the docs - have. We're all experts about our own personal thimbleful, but for the rest it's broad strokes and generalizations. Unless we need it, and then it's anything from a few weeks to a few years of headscratching.
