A group home in Ohio allowed a man with "intellectual and/or developmental disabilities" and a "history of constipation" to go weeks without a bowel movement, leading to a "massive" collection of impacted feces in his colon that "weighed over 20 pounds" and killed him, a lawsuit says.

ReplyDeleteThis condition is a lot more common than you would think. The medical term is called mega colon. Patients in hospitals that have undergone surgery and are on heavy narcotics, such as morphine or oxycodone become very constipated because narcotics slow down the bowel. In a hospital setting, they almost always catch it and administer cathartics. But every once in a while, each nurse documents, no bowel movement until the patient becomes septic.

Just saw a meme over at 90 Miles From Tyranny stating that constipation killed 2,167 people last year, compared to 297 rifle-related deaths. Poor guy was just a statistic...

The last couple of years of my wife's life was spent in and out of those places for PT. That's an industry in desperate need of a "no cell phones permitted on the job" policy. Every time I or her daughter stopped in to visit the entire aid staff could be found camped out at the nurses station with their faces buried in their cell phones instead of doing what they were paid to do.
ReplyDeleteThe last place she was at made the mistake of allowing Google reviews, to which I posted that it desperately needed such a policy. The manager of the place, a DEI hire, requested that I contact him to talk about it, to which I replied "what will it change?" Never heard anymore from him.
