We always hear the Social Security is about to run out of money. How come we never hear the WELFARE is about to run out of money?... ...And just HOW MANY BILLIONS were spent on Biden's illegal alien invasion?... 'Asking for a friend...
It is all about scale. Social security is about 1.5-1.6 trillion. Snap benefits are around 100 billion. Social security is 15 times larger than SNAP.
To put it in simple more relatable terms, you may be broke and not be able to pay rent but that doesn't mean you can't buy lunch At this point the biggest components of our budget are Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, Defense and Debt payments. In my opinion the only one that can be touched without unnecessarily hurting Americans is defense spending. To make it significant it would require scaling back international involvements (no complain here) and significantly scaling down the size of the military (if we are scaling back and not getting involved in foreign conflicts we don't need a military as big as we have). Social Security s very hard to cut. That is the people's money that they contributed with the expectation it would be there when they need it. If you touch Medicare/Medicaid you will also collapse the private healthcare industry and then we are all fucked. We can't stop debt payments either or our economy will collapse and never recover (see Argentina).
The only real option is Defense. Side note, if Elon and Trump had been serious about DOGE they should have started with Defense spending. Instead they went after things that feel good (fuck USAID) but make no real difference. Going back to my previous example cutting USAID is like not being able to pay rent and cutting your cigarette budget. Is it a step in the right direction? Yes Will you be able to pay rent now that you are not spending $5 in smokes? Nope.
many years ago, my Dad told me that getting a dog is a heartache waiting to happen. he had one dog when he was a kid and never got another one until he hit 65 and retired. although he did enjoy the dogs I had over the years. used to yell at us not to feed them from the table too. but when he got his last dog, a hairy ass mutt all of 25 pounds, yup. he slip her food when he thought no one was looking. kind of funny how things turn out .
