Getting high

I've seen this view before. Well, may not this particular one, but many like it when I built microwave towers in the Army.
Most of my towers were AB-216/U tactical towers 204 feet tall, just poking above the treetops but I had the opportunities to install antennae on a bunch of comm towers. The highest I ever worked was 776 feet, but the scariest one I ever worked on was only 60 feet tall - a self supporting tower right on the edge of a fucking cliff in the Alps with a good 60 mph wind blowing.
You want to know the funny part? I'm deathly afraid of heights and always have been. It took that period of my life to make me realize that I can do any fucking thing I set my mind to.

Fuck Starbucks

A picture truly is worth a thousand words

This picture struck me as soon as I saw it. He's happy that he has a new pair of shoes, and today's kids have closets full of $100+ sneakers, they have the latest cell phones and everything else that Daddy can (and will) buy them.
No doubt that the kid in the photo worked his ass off later in life for everything that he had and valued it because it came from the sweat of his brow, whereas today's kids hold nothing dear because it was given to them.
Is there any wonder why America is in a decline?

Up from the grave

LONDON (AP) — A famous German World War II bomber nicknamed "the flying pencil" has spent decades submerged in the English Channel after being shot down in the Battle of Britain. Now, divers are braving dangerous tides to bring it to the surface.
British officials on Friday announced a complex salvage operation just off the Kent coast in southeastern England to rescue the only known surviving example of the German Dornier Do 17 bomber. The operation is under way and if all the preparations go well, the plane will be lifted from the water in three or four weeks.

Historical photos

I've noticed through my sitemeter that I get visitors from towns that have a lot of history - Washington DC, Philadelphia, Abilene KS, Shiloh, Gettysburg, Lincoln NM, Vicksburg, Sharpsburg, etc.
I was wondering if y'all would be kind enough to send pictures, pictures that you won't find in a history book - for example, there's an old crib (house of prostitution) on the street below the Bucket of Blood Saloon in Virginia City, Nevada from it's heyday. It's the only one left standing, I've seen it myself. You can google the saloon and see fine pictures of it but not the crib.
If you know of a place that holds some historical significance, even if it's only to you, I'd like to see pictures of it, be it western history, RevWar history or Lincoln's War history, even cool old buildings and barns from your area's history - I don't care. Shit, even if it's just a fenceline with some old barbed wire on it or an old graveyard, send it on in. I don't necessarily want to post them (although I will if you ask me to), I just want to see them.
A note to my Philadelphia readers: I have never been there and I really would like to see your photos of Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, etc, anything to do with our Nation's birth.
Please though, I don't want professional or published photos - I want to see these things through your eyes.
My email is k59lane@yahoo.com
Thanks.

Happy Birthday, Hubble!

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has snapped a spectacular new image of an iconic nebula to celebrate its 23 years of peering deep into the heavens.
The Hubble observatory, which launched on April 24, 1990, captured theHorsehead Nebula in infrared light, peering through obscuring veils of dust to reveal the object's hidden features.
"The result is a rather ethereal and fragile-looking structure, made of delicate folds of gas -- very different to the nebula's appearance in visible light," mission officials wrote in an image description today (April 19). The new observations allowed astronomers to create a dazzling video of the Horsehead Nebula based on Hubble's photos.
