A way of life in California

WINTERS (CBS13) — Caught in the crosshairs of gang violence, Winters has become a hideout for gang members looking to lay low.

Three Norteño gang members were recently detained after they brandished loaded weapons in the City of Davis and fled to Winters. It’s the most recent gang-related arrest in a string of gang incidents in the small town.

I can't think of a single town in California that doesn't have Norteno or Sureno gangs. That shit is everywhere and God help you if you wear the wrong color in the wrong part of town.
I was buying a set of tires last year and as I was sitting in the shop waiting, the owner's wife was asking where I was from, then said her and her husband was attending an industry conference in LA in a couple months and asked if I had any advice. I think she was wanting tourism tips, so I gave her one.
"The red bandanna on your head looks cute, but don't wear that shit in Southern California, you'll get shot. Stay away from any red or blue clothing."
The poor little naïve thing had no idea what I was talking about and couldn't believe it when I explained it to her.
I didn't read in our local paper later about any residents of Lafayette getting shot while in SoCal, so I'm thinking she took my advice.

  1. As my hometown became progressively darker in average skin color a myriad of problems rose commensurately. Coincidentally I'm sure.

Anyhoo, about ten years into change (that took fifteen to complete) my father - who was near 70, lived at the time and for most of his life less than ten miles from the spot where he was born - went to the local mall. He'd been doing yard work and had a red bandanna tied on his head for a sweatband. He'd been there less than five minutes when a man in street clothes approached and introduced himself, showed a badge and I.D. from the local police, said he was a member of the Gang Task Force, and *strongly* recommended my dad remove the bandanna. He also added the same warning as you about blue, as well.

Dad was flabbergasted that it had got to that point but wouldn't move out of the shit. I had to leave him and Mama there when I moved me and mine away.
