  3. 1) Gotta love SpaceX. Being on team LM I was initially skeptical but they are doing more than NASA ever thought about without all the B.S. bureaucracy. You can really see those gimballed center engines at work. Some call the landing a failure but it was a low percentage chance test in the first place and SpaceX seems to be able to do testing without killing anyone.

  5. #7 wins the dumbass award of the day so far. You never stand if front of trap when you release a animal. They will attack and being right in the animals line of sight upon exits the culvert trap is a dumb way to learn your lesson. You are either on top of the trap in a vehicle. Or to the rear obliquely from the door.

    1. That might have been a trail camera with no person standing there.

    2. It was an unmanned camera.

    3. No one was in front of the trap. The camera was on a tripod, which can be seen as the bear knocks it over.

    4. I think I would pick the "in a vehicle" option. Preferably one heading away from there as fast as possible. Don't stick around if someone is going to open up a can of pissed of grizzly bear. In the words of Travis McGee "I would have been carrying a gun if I could find one small enough to carry around that would do any good". I carried a gun all the time when I was in Alaska. Not sure why. Bear attack survivors all say "there was this brown blur".

  6. The cooling tower made me sad . I was forced into retirement through the actions of Bath House Barrys weaponized EPA and far too many of our power plants being deactivated and ultimately destroyed is the reason why. Been to every power plant in America except a very few before I retired in 2012 . The news media wouldn't dare tell us the truth but it is a fact that for the past ten years including right now the Chinese are putting a brand new coal burning power plant online every ten days . They will eat our friggin lunch soon.

    1. Not a powerplant. K reactor at Savannah River, had been shutdown for many years - no electricity produced - just heat and 'exotic' materials. But I don't disagree with the sentiment.

  7. #3 That's a good trick in a driver's repertoire. I've done it at least twice that I remember. Turn into the rotation so to tighten up the spin which dissipates inertia in a hurry. Braking not required or even preferred.

Once, at night on a rain slick road coming round a bend, a herd of suicidal deer lunged in front of me. I steered toward the inside of the bend but went into a spin. I spun about 3 times and saw I was heading straight towards the bridge abutment. I purposefully tightened up the spin and came to a stop just before hitting the concrete and steel posts. I was only going about 20 MPH which should have been well under the safe speed for those conditions.

The other time was speeding wildly up a snowy pass to go rescue a friend. Occasionally I would fish tail and maybe bounce off a snow bank. But that one time when my luck ran out, I was about to slam into a clump of trees. Again, purposefully tightening up the turn to go into a spin quickly spent any inertia so the car came to a stop before hitting the trees.

    2. I was 16 and my first ice on the roads in late fall, here in Michigan. Driving with a couple of buddies in my dad's 75 Nova 3 speed. One of them said, drop it in second. So I did,and suddenly I was going 55 mph down the road- sideways. My front wheels touched the gravel on the edge of the road and just that quick, we were facing the opposite direction, at a dead stop.
All 3 of us were scared shitless, and I never tried anything like that again. They were the same friends who went with me on a Halloween night with bottle rockets in the country, shooting them onto people's roofs. Then we took traffic cones and closed a few roads, delaying the bus routes for kids who rode the bus to school the next morning.
That was about as wild as I ever got in my youth. Now my twin brother...
