MODESTO (CBS13) – Hundreds of cyclists made their way through Modesto streets this past Saturday for a bike-riding event organized by the 209 Rippers bike group.

“It was just to get the kids together in a community-style event as safely as possible and having fun along the way,” Kyle Brown, a leader of the 209 Rippers, said.

Sara Vanaman Munson’s son Dakota took part in the event that did not go as planned.

“It’s an event where people from all over California come to…meet up, track out a bike ride and they ride it, it’s giant,” Vanaman Munson said.

According to the Modesto Police Department, the group was breaking traffic laws and blocking vehicles. Officers say they even tried to stop one cyclist who took off and then spit on them when they took them into custody.

  1. Lost me at cyclist. If you're on a main road and not doing speed limit, you are violating the law. Period. No sympathy here. Not even for the fact that you idiots live in CA.

  2. I saw some pics. It looked like the fence surrounding the monkey cage at the San Diego Zoo broke.

  4. The cops need net guns to catch some of those cyclist assholes. Giant helicopter-deployed ones for events like that.

    1. Bungee cords between light poles (wires would be just too cruel).

  5. Cyclist: I have the same road rights as an automobile driver.
OK. Then follow road rules and don't bitch when your ass run over.

  6. I’ve been riding a bicycle since I was 6 years old. Kids can be pretty ignorant about rules in general but adults have no excuse. Some of the most obnoxious, entitled assholes I’ve ever met have been on club bike rides. I’m sure they are mostly progressives.
