Cashing in on crime

Citing recent mass shootings in Orange, Boulder, Colo., and the Atlanta area, state lawmakers on Tuesday advanced a proposal for a new tax on the sale of guns and ammunition in California to boost funding for violence prevention programs.

  1. I wonder if such a tax would fly if it were to infringe on First Amendment rights?

    Somehow I don't think that putting a sales tax on newspapers, taxing a church, or charging an exorbitant fee for a permit to assemble and protest would fly.
