I get it. The lesson here is that people are sheep and will gladly follow the stupid wherever the stupid lead them. Even if it's into a multi-vehicle head on collision, or the Mexifornication of America.
A roundabout in construction, Kentucky, Rowan county, intersection of county road 801 and state route 60. For reference 801 comes off I-64 and is a direct route into Cave Run Lake. If you're into fishing it's spectacular. A federal dam, so it's not touristy. Anyway... Stop signs weren't good enough (spectacular crashes) and KYDOT decided to go with the roundabout. Which was called pretty much a satanic work in Farmers KY, end of western civilization in Appalachia, debasement of my right to drive anywhere I want, etc. But there's a valuable lesson in media shaping her. Did I mention "under construction"? To be true, my old county (was born and raised there) has some incredible f'n stupid drivers. In this case though, if you do the research and watch closely, there are flaggers trying to get traffic moving through the intersection. Drone footage doesn't really capture that. Construction company posted a later video of people actually driving through this thing the right way. But you already knew not to believe everything you see on the internetz.
So you like to just sit at an intersection? Most of the time I don't even need to slow down for a roundabout. Wish they would add them at every three and four way intersection.
I grew up with roundabouts in Europe, and I have no problems with them at all. They save time, a little fuel, plus it's fun to see how fast you can go around them. That last one was a joke.
A lot of these small towns around here have a public or town square, most of them with a statue or courthouse in the middle like mine, and traffic flows smoothly around it because of the traffic circle design.
Stupidity experiment: A group of people are exiting a building of glass doors, all of which are unlocked. The first person goes through one door at the right end, because he's going that direction after he exits. The next person follows him, because the door's already open, and that saves the effort of opening another door. The rest of the crowd waits to go through the one door, instead of checking other doors to see if they're unlocked. I've seen it happen. I opened another door, then turned around to see what happened after I went through. The people in front who had seen me go through waited their turn to get through the open door.
introducing roundabouts to FUSA in late 90's early 00's was clearly an early sign of the rot that was rapidly building.
Yes yes, i can hear all your excuses about efficiency and traffic studies and other BS. Go ahead and take a semi truck around one and get back to me. I'll wait
To all of you roundabout haters. Where I live, they have built several at dangerous intersections and the actual studies are amazing. Maybe 6 or so folks a year would die at these intersections due to folks running red lights, stop signs' being on a hill(LOS issues), etc., and a roundabout basically reduces the fatalities to zero.
Here they put retard abouts on some quiet residential streets. They are so small that you cannot take a long pickup and make a left turn. If the center was low, it would be easy, but sadly, not so. On large streets they might make sense, but the learning curve for most drivers is longer than a democrat budget bill. I've had more than one driver scream obscenities at me when I had the right of way. They might save a life? Some people are better off dead.
Grew up in UK where roundabouts on dual carriageways (4lane divided hwy) are awesome- good sight distance, to see traffic that will have the right of way. No traffic crossing, and nothing on the inside lane, drop it down a cog or two, and steer a good line through it at full throttle. Most of the ones around here (Ga) are built deliberately to prevent you taking a good line through them. Kiljoys Differ

ReplyDeleteThe lesson I got was that no matter how easy and simple a process, there's always an idiot that can't/won't follow it

I hate roundabouts.
ReplyDeleteWhy?
DeleteA lot of the time, a roundabout at an intersection means that, much of the time, traffic doesn't even slow down much, let alone stop.
Stop signs or traffic lights force MANY more vehicles to stop when it's not necessary.
Me too! They are an accident waiting to happen.
Deletecompletely agree. The ones I use in the Portlandia region really speed up passage through the intersection.

My Limey friends thought this was a Benny Hill episode.

On a turn-around you worry about all the newbies morns getting lost and crashing into you.
