Wonderful. Now bourbon is going to be racist...

How important were slaves to American whiskey?

Last year, Louisville-based Brown-Forman told the New York Times that former slave Nearest Green actually taught the Jack Daniel how to distill. I was quoted in this story and would like to elaborate about the enslaved people’s contributions to American whiskey.

    1. I've already seen it bruited about that the ONLY reason blacks were taken as slaves by whites was to prevent them (blacks) from taking their rightful place as the superior beings of the world.

Right. That "superiority is why sub-Saharan Africa is a dog's breakfast and has been for millenia. Sheesh.

    2. The perpetually aggrieved class.
They're now blaming white people in South Africa for not teaching them how to run the farms before they slaughtered the owners of them. Thats right, white man didn't teach them the ways of their magic dirt, so now they can't grow anything, and are literally starving to death in the cradle of life, breadbasket of the world.
White mans fault... always and forever.

  2. It's getting pretty old...
They must really be stupid if they
have to claim to of invented everything.

  3. Newly added to my stupendously long list of things that chap my ass: Saying/writing "enslaver", "enslaved", "enslaved persons", and variants ("enslaved laborers" I saw recently).

It doesn't make chattel slavery any more heinous to refer to it in any of the above ways. Humans got along fine with just "slave" for thousands of year and still can.

  4. If they are all that industrious and inventive and smart and all that, just why the fuck didn't they build up sub Sahara Africa to be a paradise with great cities of learning and have a defense against being raided and taken for slavery?

  5. I personally will be forever grateful to the slaves who got together to write the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights for the white racists who were credited with founding the country....

  6. If anyone thinks that the Irish, Scottish and English needed the Africans to figure out alcoholic beverages, they're fucking retarded.

    3. Scottish distillation around 1100. Danish Viking freeze distillation before 900, example is the Jelling cup, which holds the volume still sold as a shot of spirits in Sweden.
Arab (not African) distillation around the same time, but used for vapor (steam) infusion of spices and flowers, as drinking alcohol was prohibited.
Black African "societies" like the Zulu and Ashanti were top down near-totalitarian govts in the manner of Titos' Yugoslavia, where he balanced by force the competing low-trust ethnic / tribal groups.
The major problem of Sub-Saharan Africa and much of the Third World is tribalism and low trust societies.

  7. Sweet Jesus. The elevation of blacks has now reached IQ50 level stupidity and outright insanity. According to these arm-dragging lunatics now calling themselves leaders, blacks not only created civilization and all its modern implements and technologies, they are now going to save it. A couple more generations of this and the survivors will be wondering what the term "air conditioning" meant, and believe that the big metal things that supposedly flew in the air were just bedtime stories. But give Gates and Fauci their due, they will have reduced world population by at least 80%.

  8. So what are the preferred drinks of the African crowd? Besides Night Train, Mad Dog 2020, Cisco Red and Thunderbird. Should give us a clue to what they accomplished.

  9. All you have to do is go across the tracks in any hometown to know how "inventive" these chiggers really are. How else do you suppose they are able to have a brand new Lexus/Mercedes on dubs sitting outside their shanties?

  10. Africa had no history of distallation and most evidence of brewing indicates it was of the primative variety - ie leave fruit juice in the sun to ferment; as opposed to what europe started doing during roman times and selecting yeast etc to control the process and ensure a consistent product.

    1. In some cases the fermentation occurred differently: feed elephants certain ripe fruits, then follow the elephant around until it starts to get wobbly, then kill it and drink the fermented juice in its stomach. At least that's what the internet factoid said.

  12. About 25 years ago, a history professor mentioned a student who disclaimed Eli Whitney's invention of the cotton gin. Whitney never picked cotton, therefore he could not possibly determine how to separate cotton seed from the fiber. The professor did not mention the student's race, but in her Indo-British Mumbai-raised accent, quoted the student: "Eli Whitney di-dunt invent no co-ton gin." It was funny to hear.

  13. Exactly what the hell do you think the lyrics "Jimmy crack corn and I don't care my master's gone away" mean? . Having said that I agree with Anonymous above. I don't think my Irish ancestors needed any help learning how to make (or drink) whiskey. I've got Grandpa's wine making paddle he used during prohibition on display right here in this room. He drank himself to death at the age of 82. I kept telling him that booze was gonna kill him!

  14. Let's also give credit to the mules that plowed the fields of the ingredients used in whiskey. Mules and negroes are the most important component in the history of alcoholic beverages. Oh, and the cows. Their shit fertilized everything.

  15. If that is the case, why does Africa have no pre-European history of distilled spirits?

  16. As a certified Jack Daniel's 'Tennessee Squire' who has visited the distillery and been taken on the tour by 'Junior,' I can honestly say that I couldn't care less who taught Mr. Daniel to distill his fine whiskey. In my old age, it has become a bit sweet to my taste compared to my current drink of choice - Tullamore Dew Irish - but a shot of Jack Daniel's Black with a twist at the end of a long day is a pleasure.

  17. P.S. - Jack Daniel's is recognized by the federal government as 'Tennessee Whiskey,' not bourbon.
