First he bucked the tree off at the stump, but didn't cut it all the way off, leaving what we call a "Russian Coupling", which is that sliver of intact, uncut wood that you see when the log drops, at 7:00 on the face of the stump before the stump falls back. It's juuuust enough wood to hold that log attached to the stump.
Then we see him making the second cut, which is where the gif picks up. What you don't notice because the movement is minute, but I know is happening from bucking 100's of thousands of trees......is that as he is cutting on that second cut, the log/tree begins to sag a tiny little bit, and it is enough to change the stress on that Russian Coupling back on the stump, making it finally break (it was just baaarely holding on in the first place) and drop the whole tree onto the ground and let the stump fall.
He is dressed head to toe in protective gear, but is not very experienced at this, and is lucky he didn't get his leg crushed.
It is a very flat surface where it separates near the roots. Ergo... He must have done a 90% cut there before our video started. Given how much heavy material moved when it released that was probably the wise choice from a safety perspective.
I'm not sure how he chose his position for the 2nd cut. However, the saw well is away from his body. He seems unalarmed that the log moved towards his legs. I would have been scared for my knees.
#9 Pretty cool. I'd like to know about that. Hope it aint to good to be true.

ReplyDelete#10 Pretty bad when you can't stand your own farts.
ReplyDelete#6 All sorts of weird going on. He wasn't even actually cutting at the base when the roots fell back, yet it was nearly cut through?
ReplyDeleteYeah, that one has me puzzled, too.

I've seen a few like that after tornadoes. Doing it wrong is an easy ticket to the mortuary.
Delete#6 -that's a good way to conceal the bodies...
ReplyDelete#1 If there ever was "like a boss" this is a top contender.
ReplyDelete#4, Why? Because I haven't broken any bones in a long time.
