Brookside Police Chief Mike Jones resigns after AL.com report on traffic trap

Mike Jones, the chief of police in the small Alabama town of Brookside, resigned today in the wake of revelations by AL.com that he turned the department into an aggressive traffic trap that by 2020 received half its revenue from fines and forfeitures, many on minor offenses from those who drive by the town on Interstate 22.

  1. Realizing the police have just as many personalities as any other I do find it ironic when I listen to cops on some TV news "stop treating us like the enemy" and my thought is "YOU stop treating US like the enemy". In my opinion the #1 crime of police today is the so-called civil forfeiture or better known as "policing for profit". Cops today have been turned into nothing more than Highway Bandits. With sanctioned guns.

    1. Brookside is a near-dead mining town that once was a booming community. The only business besides the shakedown is a Dollar General. In the original article, There was a story about a local woman who was written a ticket for "failure to dim" her headlights. She was fined $481.00! The town's police force grew from 1 to 10 full and part-time officers when the pirates took control. All of these criminals need strung up from lamp posts with placards placed around their necks saying "This is what happens to people who abuse their power and steal from the people they were sworn to serve". West Jefferson County is fairly backwoods. I am surprised some vigilante justice hasn't been exacted. I saw on the news this afternoon where the Lt. Governor is going to conduct an audit. I hope at the very least the perps get some jail time and have some of their money and assets confiscated.

  4. Now the rest of the police force needs to resign or be fired, and everyone who paid a traffic fine since this crap started should be refunded, or file a class action lawsuit.

  7. This is why I have long believed that no revenue for traffic fines should ever go to the entity that employed the cops who initiated the fine. Perhaps instead, the fines can all go into a fund to compensate people harmed by uninsured motorists?

    1. Fund charities. Allow the speeders to pick any charitable organization to mail the fine to.

  8. The chief, and every officer on the payroll at the time of his resignation should be terminated for cause and banned from working for law enforcement in ANY capacity for life.
