How Defund the Police backfired
Over the last two decades, progressives have established a new consensus on crime. Nonviolent felonies like shoplifting and drug possession should be reclassified as misdemeanours. Cities should defund the police and spend the money on nurses, psychologists and social workers instead. Offenders should have minimal involvement with the justice system — and be kept out of jail wherever possible.

"minimal involvement with the justice system"
ReplyDeleteThe way I interpret that is a short time between the arrest to the trial. If convicted a maximum prison sentence to keep the offender from returning to society and possibly have any involvement with the justice system anytime soon.
Two spouses of cousins were long term parole officers. when asked how many "success" stories they have, "one", said the first and, "four" said the second.
ReplyDeleteThe first was exaggerating and the second an outright liar.
DeleteI'd say forget parole and probation. Instead horse whip them for the first and possibly second convictions. On the third, castration.
If that doesn't convince them to behave, teach them how to Air dance Texas style.
"Minimal involvement with the justice system" - well, drumhead trials for violent offenders would seem to satisfy that goal.
ReplyDeleteA "three strikes and you're dead" law would reduce the number of people in prisons, and greatly reduce recidivism. Also, making DAs and Judges responsible for the crimes committed by criminals released on bond, low bond, or no bond, would make sure that habitual offenders stay in jail until trial, where they can't commit further murders, burglaries, robberies, rapes, etc.
ReplyDeleteI always found it interesting that the Old Testament Hebrews has three punishments:
ReplyDeleteRestitution (pay for your damage)
Exile (forced into the wilderness, nearly a death sentence)
Execution
Makes one wonder why *we* pay for the upkeep of criminals. I mean, I dump >$200 + my already insane sick care "insurance" premiums per month to buy the insulin I need to live. Any crook gets that shit for free. At some point, it will be better for my family if I knock over a liquor store just to get thrown in prison.
