Are American Made RPG-7s Taking Down Russian Tanks in Ukraine?
The ironies of contemporary world history are many and sometimes profound. Recently, complicated politics in post-Soviet Eastern Europe dragged a number of towering ironies before the eyes of the world during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. One of these ironies is the fact many of the weapons being used by both sides were created during the Cold War by the now-dead U.S.S.R. empire — an empire whose geography Russia now seems to be attempting to reacquire.

After the debacles in Every country US armament has been left in since Korea, I'm sure they have no idea who has what, or where.

I have never understood why the Army and Marines have never fielded a similar weapon to the RPG. Yes, the Javelin is a sure tank killer with its top attack profile. However, knocking the treads off of a tank is just as effective at stopping it and the RPG can kill tanks when fired into the side or rear. Then there's the cost comparison. RPG costs peanuts compared to a Javelin @ $178K per each compared to ~$1K for an RPG including launcher. The Javelin weighs 48 ponds compared to the 15 pounds for an RPG including launcher and the RPG projectile weighs around 5 pounds.
ReplyDeleteSo you may have to shoot a tank a couple of times to kill it with an RPG, PFFT. No contest, IMHO. As someone once said, "Quantity has a quality all its own".
Remember seeing pictures of the Viet Cong marching south on the Ho Chi Min trail with every soldier showing two RPG rounds sticking out of their backpacks? There was a method to their madness. From what I've read, it's also a pretty effective antipersonnel weapon as I'm sure some that visit here can attest to firsthand.
