Redemption

GRAVES COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A Kentucky inmate is being hailed as a hero for helping people buried under the debris of the candle factory in Mayfield after the Dec. 10 tornado.

Graves County Sheriff Jon Hayden said in a Facebook post that Marco Sanchez was on a work detail at the Mayfield factory when the tornado hit. The sheriff called Sanchez a hero, saying he undoubtedly saved lives that night.

I don't know if this guy had a Come To Jesus moment or what, but judging from this story and his statements, he sounds like he's getting his shit together.

And here's an update:

Sanchez will be released from jail on Tuesday afternoon. Sheriff Hayden says they will take him around to set up a new phone and bank account and present him with a car donated in his honor.

Sheriff Hayden said Sanchez was serving time for a theft committed when Sanchez was homeless. Hayden said Sanchez is a prime example of why you shouldn’t just a book by its cover.

“At every turn, he made the right decision. He could have as some people would, your hurt, you’re injured, you’ve gone through a traumatic event, you know that you’re lucky to be alive, you would worry about yourself self-preservation. And that wasn’t the way he reacted,” Sheriff Hayden said.

  1. The news coverage has also reconnected him with family in Arizona that hadn't seen him in 20 odd years.

  2. People aren't wrong when they say the system is broken, just how they think its broken.

  3. Sometimes a come to Jesus moment is all it takes.
But, sounds like he was a 'victim' of his circumstances, and not a victim of his personality.

  4. Good for him. A feel good story amongst all of the current chaos. Now, some other good samaratan give him a good job to aid in his rehab to normal society.

  5. I have a buddy who’s a fireman. He gets convict work details all the time when fighting CA brush fires. A lot of times the same guys. They are too happy to get out and do some good. Iirc it helps them with their time.

    1. I would bet that they work harder, and are more dependable than a hundred of the college boys that you find sitting in a Starbucks, waiting for the world to give them a living. The world never gave me a damn thing, unless I got off my ass and earned it. I have been working since age 11, and now at age 61, I am done. But when I see someone who is trying to pick themselves up and make something of themselves, it makes me proud of them, and I can only tell them, good job , and I hope you succeed, to as high as your aim.
