Pat Tillman: Portrait of an American Hero

On May 31, 2002, Pat Tillman and his brother Kevin walked into a local recruiting office and enlisted in the US Army. Pat walked away from a $3.6 million professional football contract and Lord knows what else so he could serve his country in the immediate aftermath of 911. Pat Tillman’s story is that of a conflicted man and a horribly flawed system. However, his is a tale of epic sacrifice and genuine selfless service.

Pat Tillman was the eldest of three sons born to Patrick and Mary Tillman in Fremont, California. By NFL standards, Tillman was not a terribly big man. He stood 5’11” and weighed 202 pounds when dressed out as a safety for the Arizona Cardinals. Pat personified the axiom, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.”

Me not being a sports fan at all, I had never even heard of Pat Tillman until I heard the guys at work talking about him enlisting.
I thought it was an incredibly Patriotic thing he did, delaying or giving up a multi-million dollar career to serve his Nation.

  1. A really good dude. Although a bit naive.

  2. I'm probably going to get slammed for this but I don't give a damn. It was stupid and naïve of him to enlist. These BS wars are not for the propaganda BS the MSM feeds us. TPTB own this country and use the military as their personal enforcers. That's all the military are now. Do they take care of the vets? Hell no! People need to wake and see that we're all nothing but tax slaves to TPTB. They call us "useless eaters" and are in the process right now of culling the herd.

  3. Same same. Never heard of him until he was killed. Yup, I guess he gave up a lot to serve. I'd call him a true American although I have no use for sports whatsoever.

John Wayne went to his grave regretting that he had never done that.

  5. The book "Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman" by Jon Krakauer goes in to detail on his story and how the incident went down. Frustrating, tragic and everything we now come to expect from our horrible duplicitous .gov and .mil.

  6. Our politicians really abuse well meaning young people via the military. Pat Tillman lost his life for an ideal that has been lost to a coterie of criminal weasel politicos.

  8. Tillman's death was a shame to the Army. They stupidly tried to cover up the truth that Tillman was killed by "friendly fire." He was certainly worthy of the truth.

  9. I hate how his death seems more important to people, just because he gave up some money and played football, then all the other young men who died.
