My Dad was US Army Air Corps 1942-1945 and flew fighters. He told me he was issued a snub nose .38 but traded it for a .45 after surviving a nighttime suicide attack on Iwo Jima the night of March 29, 1945 by hundreds of Japanese soldiers who were specifically targeting the pilots.
