Was that little Buckle Up ditty a thing here in the States? They played the shit out of it on AFN.
Show the world you care...
ReplyDeleteThe commercial was on everywhere. I think song was made from a 40’s musical. I’m sure the “buckle up” became more famous than the original.

ReplyDeleteYes it was, and thanks for the earworm Kenny.
ReplyDeleteBuckle up for safety, buckle up.
Buckle up for safety, always buckle up.
Pull your seatbelt snug, give an extra tug
Buckle up for safety, when you’re driving buckle up.
I remember the ditty...in NY, when dinosaurs roamed the planet...
ReplyDeleteto the tune of "over there"?
ReplyDeleteNope, to the tune of "Buckle Down Winsocki" from the 1943 movie "Best Foot Forward."
DeleteI like the original -

Things were way better when I started driving (Legally) in 1959...No catalytic converters, gas was 28 cents a gallon, bench seats worked great at the drive-in and fucking seat belts were only for the Indy 500
ReplyDeleteTires that lasted 5,000 miles, engines that required oil changes every 2,000 miles, new spark plugs every 10,000 miles...
DeleteI'm with you on the spark plugs needing to be changed every 10,000 miles, but back then they could be changed by you in no time. Nowadays it's several hours of cussing to change them.
DeleteI've never had to change my oil every 2,000 miles though, and I've never had to buy new tires after only 5,000 miles.
Missing the larger point. Why was a 14 year old driving a motor vehicle?
ReplyDeleteSteve
Several states have 14 as the age for farm permits.
DeleteHe stole it....
DeleteThe mom arm kept us all safe.

I know the kid that was driving. Figured he would either become a priest or an ax murder. It is still unknown if he was stealing the truck or not. It was his mother's boyfriend that was killed...
ReplyDeleteMy seatbelt story is me driving solo in my sister's Gran Torino. I took a sweeping left turn a little to fast. Next thing I know is I'm hard against the right side door with left arm outstretched holding the wheel coasting down from 70 mph.
ReplyDeleteI had slid right across the vinyl bench seat. I held the wheel to match the curve so I was alright for the moment. Then I realized the road is going to straighten out up ahead. I didn't have a firm grip on the wheel. No way could adjust the wheel from where I sat. But I had to be very careful pulling myself back into place behind the wheel.
It was too iffy and I need a better plan in a hot hurry. I let go of the wheel for the nanosecond it took to use both hands to scramble back behind the wheel.
Yes, I was going around a sweeping turn at speed with no hands on the wheel and no pedals within reach. Besides, I couldn't let none of the cars I had passed on the long straight away before the turn.
My guardian angel rotated out of service after that. Too many gray hairs.
The pair were both on or in the same truck.
ReplyDeleteKid, take the wheel and watch this!
Driver's Ed.
The guy killed was on the drivers side running board....
DeleteHelluva trick to demonstrate to a driver in training. Advanced.
DeleteShow the world you care by the belt you wear...
ReplyDeleteKen, Back story on this. After finding out that the deceased was not as wealthy as the kid's mom thought, an argument ensued. During the argument the kid stole the truck. The deceased, on foot, chased after the truck, jumped on the drivers side running board and tried to stop the kid. At about 60 mph the deceased was launched from the running board and expired. Unknown if charges have been filed.....
