Union Pacific 2nd railroad to drop push for one-person crews

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Union Pacific has become the second major freight railroad in the past week to back away from the industry’s longstanding push to cut train crews down to one person as lawmakers and regulators increasingly focus on rail safety following last month’s fiery derailment in Ohio.

  1. Ever since we'll before the war against Southern secession was waged on behalf of the railroads and northern manufacturers, the railroads have been essentially a government subsidized and protected cartel. Were railroads held to the same safety standards that every other company is held to, including liability, this issue would never have come up, and 1000+ train derailments per year would not be routine.

    1. More than 1,000. (accidents)
2021 had around 1,700 down from almost 3,000 in 2000. Safety has improved a lot in the last 20 years, but the infrastructure is still in need of constant upgrading.
      The technology is improving.
What we should be really talking about are pipelines for HazMats, or specialty truck boxes like the ones we already use for nuclear waste.

  2. Can you spell Lac Megantic? One dude per train. Worked his 8 or 10 (can't remember), and sleeps it off at a nearby motel. Murphy's Law took care of the rest.
