Handguns & Sports: Tennessee bill calls for private school handgun and athletic policies

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--The Tennessee General Assembly will review a bill in committee combining handgun policies and sports participation policies for private schools.

  1. The House handgun bill is HB1202, Senate bill is SB1325

Take a look at it. Once again it has been written so that the most practical solution for a private school would be to hire an off-duty cop/deputy.
The training required far overshadow the actual requirements for the assignment; I don't think many teachers are going to volunteer themselves to qualify.
The assignment doesn't require someone that is trained to the point where they can make Chuck Norris cry like a schoolgirl; if Florida is any indication, all it takes is one fat-ass cop nearing retirement that's no good for patrol anymore. Put him on the campus and give him one job: Get between the shooter and the kids and hope he doesn't run and hide.

Also note, the whole discussion is moot, because the Senate won't take up its version until January 2024. I'm betting it goes to "Summer Study" which is Tennessee GOP talk for "Bills We Don't Want to Vote On."
