The Vietnam War was plagued with uncertainties on both sides. One of these frustrations for the American troops was A) knowing who the enemy is and B) Finding them. The Viet Cong ran circles around Us forces by being masters of espionage and deception. From hiding amongst civilians to hiding in 5-stores deep underground tunnels, these soldiers were experts in their field.

Heavy shit man.
ReplyDeleteSpent 4 years in the Navy, '65-'69. Had no idea what was happening in VietNam. Got home and my uncle gave me a book to read called "The Tunnels of Cu Chi". Unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteMid-69, Somewhere SE of DaNang is a huge valley with a river where not much grew. It looked like a desert. Maybe desert or agent orange? I remember flying out on choppers. Then riding tanks and going under a couple old, huge and long, probably French, concrete and iron bridges. All of them had been blown in the center between spans. Then we walked quite a ways. We did sweeps of this valley for a couple weeks. I was one of several demo men. We all were blowing small bunkers every day. A short tunnel to a bunker with the ceiling, walls and floors all paneled with split bamboo. A quarter stick on the ceiling was all I needed. One day we discovered a 36 bunker tunnel complex. We found AK's, SKS's, lots of ammo and even a 50 cal pom pom. All coated in rust and rotted stocks. We blew the shit outta it. That was the biggest tunnel complex I was ever in. I wish I knew the name of that valley or where to hell ever I was.
ReplyDeleteDunna know the Vee name but may be what we named "The Arizona". I spent a little time in/out of Hill 55.
DeleteYeah, I was on or should say I passed through 55 a few times. I was on the Liberty and the Golden Gate for a while. I Corp 3/1 India. Arizona Territory. Went to Dodge City three times. The valley I speak of we loaded up at 3/1 Battalion rear which at the time was South of the Cau Dou Bridge. I remember it was surrounded by white sand. We flew ESE for a long time. Then as said on tanks/amtracks and road E for quite a while. I think we were close to Cambodia. I talked to an Army guy once and he said, you were in the Valley of Death. I never heard of that so maybe it was an Army name for the place. Thanks for the response.
