Czar Vladimir

That Russian President Vladimir Putin would win another term in office was an easy bet to make. He won with what appears to be 87 percent of the vote and—more surprisingly—with 74 percent turnout, breaking his own records from previous contests. Even if the election itself was as questionable as critics claim, the enthusiasm that ordinary Russians show for their strongman is real. Lack of democratic institutions in a nation like Russia is not to be mistaken for a lack of popular support, which should be taken seriously.

  2. If you grew up fearing being sent to Siberia if you don't agree with the Party, I can see where people will vote the way they're told. Add in some ballot counting and Nationalism by showing how Mother Russia is fighting the world on TV every night and I'm surprised it wasn't 90%. I guess they took off 3% manually to make it more realistic!

    2. Don't laugh. Trudeau set up "vaccine hesitant" detainment centers in North Battleford, Saskatchewan during COVID, and was actively hiring ex-RCMP to be the ones who pick up the non-conformists. Despots aren't unique everywhere else.

  3. Well, we can't fault elections in other countries when we just had a stolen presidential election and presently have a fake president..... Also no major national politician has done anything to fix the issue and prevent another stolen election

  4. It kills Americans to realize this, but the average Russian is in better shape today than anytime in the last 100 years. Add to this that Putin understands his people as xenophobes with severe distrust of outsiders and his popularity isn't a surprise.

    1. Nope, they aren't. They were much better off 15 years ago than they are now. The war is wearing on their economy. Putin is keeping the people around Moscow and St. Pete quiet, but the rest of the country is not doing at all well.

    2. This is solid TRUTH. Historically, it makes sense - especially from a Russian viewpoint.

  5. Putin's approval among Russians polls right at that 87% that voted for him. And his election was obviously fixed, because he's not a "rules based international order"-approved popularly-democtatically-elected leader like Biden, and Sunak, and Macron, and Scholz, who are all very popular with their citizens, honest they are, because they govern so responsibly in their country's interest.

    Thanks for the laugh, Ken.

  6. The only amazing thing is that 13% may have become suicidal.

  7. I gotta say, I don't give a shit about what any other countries politics looks like. What are we going to do about the politics in OUR country!?! Nothing, just point fingers at what is different in others. Well, soon enough the US will be sending you to meet Russians and get killed, so there is that.

  8. I think he's practically a god among men, and wish we had anyone even half as good. I don't care how many times people call him a thug, he's by far the most decent world leader we have had since they blew JFK's head off six decades ago... while the leaders in the "Collective West" get lower and lower and lower, stupider and more vicious, until now we have some who could give Adolf Hitler a run for his money.

  9. We can say what we want about Putin, yet whether or not anyone likes him or approves of what he says or does, it is clear he loves his country first. Don't forget, it was Decatur who famously said, "America, right or wrong." There is no way any Democrat or Liberal out there who puts the USA or Canada first, just their bank accounts. And that is the reason I prefer Donald Trump as a leader - I doubt everything he wants to do will work, but he sure isn't going to do anything to consciously hurt any lawful person, American citizen or otherwise.
