  1. I saw him play for the Mets in 1973, but I was not born yet when he was with the NY Giants and i was too young when he was with the Giants after they moved to Cali. He was still good, but not the same ball player he was in his younger years.

One of the best all around ball players ever.

  2. Miss his style of play. Got to watch him both with the SF Giants and the Mets. Many a cold night at Candlestick Park. God Speed!

  3. Back in 1956 when I was about four feet tall, maybe 50lb I started Little League. My bat, an Adirondack 28 with Willy Mays signature and picture.

  4. Same here (Mets sometime in the 70s). I think Dave Kingman, Felix Millan and Tom Seaver were all playing with him at the same time. I was but a child so don't remember the exact dates of those players.

    1. Same here. I have a ball with his signature as well as Seaver Magraw Millner Staub Garrett Grote and few others that are smudged a little. My older cousin went to all their home games and gifted me that ball. I was about 7or 8 then. Forgot Buddy Haroldson and Kleon Jones for crying out loud….

  7. Willie comes from a time when baseball meant something and fans were attached to a team and its players. I’ve gone from an avid player in my youth to a A’s season ticket holder to indifference today. When owners stopped caring about fans then I stopped being one. Damn shame, I loved baseball.

  8. I was at a game with my Dad at Candlestick when Willie had a chance to win the game with a clutch hit late in the game. When he struck out, a big Black guy a couple of rows below us stood up and hollered "That's alright, Willie. I'zze still loves you". Everybody within earshot laughed and applauded.
