Rate of Shoplifting Spikes Across U.S.

The rate of shoplifting saw a noticeable increase in the first half of 2024, even as the rates of other crimes fell to levels not seen since before the Chinese Coronavirus pandemic.

According to the Daily Caller, a study by the Council of Criminal Justice (CCJ) determined that shoplifting rose by 24% in 23 different cities across the country, compared to the first half of 2023. That rate is also about 10% higher than the first half of 2019. Meanwhile, the rates of homicide and robbery fell to lower than the levels seen in 2019.

  1. I thought Ray Ban Joe said crime was down. I guess he overlooked this statistic when he was down with covid and being fired by Obama

  2. A day doesn't go by in my area of three major supermarkets without a report of hundreds of dollars of groceries being taken at any or all of the stores.

  3. They neglect to report that the cities with high crime rates have stopped reporting their statistics.

  4. Walmart has a typical 2% acceptable shrink rate. If your local supercenter is a $100 million dollar store (yearly revenue), as most are, that means they accept losing $1 - $2 million dollars of merchandise to theft.

That's a lotta money that could be used to pay security guards to protect their stock so they could cut down on loss. Instead they rely on local cops , paid with your taxes, to be store security.

Loss to theft is a tax write-off, cheaper to let it happen than be liable for a gung-ho wannabe security guard putting the smack down on a shoplifter.

    1. I sat outside of a big Walmart in my area one day when my wife went in for a couple of things. I watched this guy walk out with 5 or 6 items not in bags and throw them into his car. He went back in the store and 5 minutes later he walked back out again with a bunch of stuff, again, not in bags. Threw that stuff in his car and repeated it again 2 more times. I called the store and asked to speak to the manager and told him what was going on. He said there wasn't much he could do about it. You tell them what's going on and they still do nothing about it.

  5. I'm sure it's way higher than that. I read recently where the cops threatened some store in Kali - told them to stop calling all the time about pavement apes and methheads stealing stuff.

Don't believe the stats about crime being down. What's really happening is LEO has stopped bothering to submit all the paperwork to the FBI (who compiles the stats) since their local DA's aren't bothering to follow the law and instead let the perps go. So it's garbage in-garbage out.
