The American taste for the avocado has skyrocketed in the 21st century, with the US Department of agriculture noting the annual per capita avocado demand tripling to 8 pounds between 2000 and 2021. Whether for trendy toast or for football party guacamole, the story behind the evergreen fruit is a spicy addition to the mix.

My wife and I eat close to 8 lbs a week...seriously. Obviously we are eating for a lot of folks.
ReplyDeleteLoves me some Guacamole! On toast? Have not tried that, probably won't.

We are on the GOLO program. They have some great avocado toasts and whole wheat tortilla creations with avocado for breakfast that are outstanding.
DeleteHad avocado trees, ate avocado on toast with mayo, salt & pepper before it became a "thing".
DeleteAnd you can't have ceviche without them!

When I lived in California and could get some really good avocados, that was the daily treat in my lunch.
DeleteWe had an avocado tree in our back yard. Salt water intrusion from Hurricane Idalia killed it.
DeleteI must have 20 avocado pits growing, I don't think they ever grow a avocado but there fun to grow. Have one that's been growing for 15yrs , grows to the top of the green house , drops it's leaves & I chop it down & it takes off again.
ReplyDeleteI have a banana tree like that, it does grow bananas but they never ripen
DeleteAvocados are ok, I only have it as a dip for chips if I'm having a Mexican/TexMex dish

I put a dwarf tree out about two years ago. It's doing well. I don't know about elsewhere but in Hawaii avacado grow to be a huge tree. I mean really freakin big.
ReplyDeleteThe avocado trees dad planted were every bit of 40 feet tall. I know because at full extension, the 20' extension ladder didn't reach. The drip line was about 25 feet diameter.
DeleteDad planted two Bacons. The fruits they produced were huge. I measured them compared to what you find in the store. Three times the size, over 5x the volume. At store prices they'd fetch about $8 each.
ReplyDeleteSome major road construction adjacent to the trees stunted then killed the trees.
Tastes like grass...
ReplyDeleteI'm with ya. Haven't found anything to add to 'em that helps to choke 'em down.
DeleteBobby, you eat grass?
DeleteI do love a good avocado history video.
ReplyDeleteGuacamole is spreadable kale.
ReplyDeleteAround here, what I have discovered is the direct correlation to the consumption of guacamole to the decreased ability of men to hold the door open for women and the elderly, and a significantly decreased ability to be able to change a tire.
Could be all the soy in everything, too.
DeleteJust saying.
