Confessions of a Glock 19: It’s Lonely at the Top

Like most Austrians, I try to keep it low key. You know, abide by the whole “keep your mouth closed and let your work do the talking” thing. But it hasn’t been easy. You see, from the moment I hit the scene in 1988 my detractors have done their best to discredit me. They’ve called me every dirty name in the book: tactical Tupperware, the brick, and my personal favorite, the McPistol. But after 36 years on the market I’m known simply as the GOAT.

That’s right, it’s me, the Glock 19—the pistol people love to hate.

  1. I have one. I shoot my cheap A$$ ruger SR9C better and I like it better.

  2. Guys at the range make fun of it but I can outshoot most of them (I brought home two turkeys one year shooting against more-advanced shooters so there’s that.)

Call it what you want, I love my 19.

    1. I tried like hell to like the 19. I just don’t shoot it as well as my 26 or my 17. Don’t know why…the compacts for *me* don’t put the rounds where I want like the full size or the subcompacts do.

  3. Don’t love to hate it. Just don’t like the spongy stringer, the slide, the grip angle or much of a thing else about that ugly pos.

  4. it's a great tool! i know of one at a certain space center with over a million rounds at the range, minimal cleaning, no failures, not bad

    1. Precisely!
Great tool! Not perfect, not pretty, but a great tool for it’s purposes.
Gaston Glock changed the industry by bringing:
      1) incredible reliability
      2) value
      3) simplicity
Like them, or not, his design affected the whole handgun industry.

  6. I've owned many pistols over the years, but no Glocks. Now I live in a Commonwealth where only cops can own them. And the State cops dictate which pistols a commoner may purchase.

and now, no semi-automatic firearms......at all

    2. Really sad given that they were one of the original colonies.

  7. Yes, Glock was first, and pretty much stayed right there except for minor variations. Yes, Glock has stood the test of time. Yes, everyone since is standing on Glock's shoulders.

For me, CANIK. What Glock should have evolved to 20 years ago, and at half the price.

  8. Have carried a G-19 for many years but gave it to my son about a year ago. Replaced it with used a G-17 at a very good cost. Both great shooters that go Bang every time. Not one day of regret!

  9. I like my G19. Bought it with money I made by growing tomatoes.

  10. I prefer it’s near twin the model 23. I don’t think men’s hands are “sized” beyond s/m/l/xl but I wear a size 14EE shoe and my hands are a bit large. Nothing fits my hand like a Glock

  11. Nothing wrong with GLOCK. I just don't like them.

They rose to prominence by selling to the police at cost or just below, then making up the price with armorer contracts that made them big money.

They became mainstream because the cops carried them. The cops believed they were the "best pistol ever made" because that's what they were told and because they worked well with minimal maintenance (like cleaning or lube)...
They work. that's all they got, but they do it well.

  12. I have all kinds of sidearms including a G-19 that I really like. My opinion: Whatever you have or like, get down to the range and learn to hit with it. That matters more than differences between pistol types or even calibers. A hit with a .22 is better than a miss with a .44.

  13. I have actually never even held a Glock. Not hate, I'm just indifferent to them. Then again, I'm 59 and a veteran, & I have never fired a 9mm Parabellum. I shoot a good bit of 9mm Makarov.

  14. My 9mms include P08, C96, BHP, 3913 and a 469. (No 9mm 1911 yet.)
I can appreciate a Glock for what it is but never really cottoned to one.

  15. My everyday carry is my Glock 19, Gen 2. It came with Trijicon nite sights. After 25 years I replaced them with tritium sights from TruGlo. She’s had thousands of rounds through her without a hiccup. The only modifications she’s had is the captured buffer spring which Glock in Syrmna, GA sent me for free. I still have the original buffer and buffer spring. The other mod is some grip work I did myself with a woodburning tool. Glock Nation!

    1. Roger that! Started carrying my G19 in 1990. My Tussy worked, steel Commander was not 98% reliable. The only FTF with my Glock, was when I ran non full length resized reloads through it, the round that wedged, in taught me a lesson.
My only mods were changing out the plastic recoil spring guide, with a bress one, did that in the 1995ish and night sites.

  16. Glock 37 in 45 GAP is my preferred Glock. The GAP is a smaller cartridge than the ACP but is rated the same ballistics of 45 ACP +P. The early model 37's were overbuilt and could handle loads in the 41 mag range with the 200 gr slugs. The only down side is it has a 10 round magazine. The 37 or the G 20 10mm are my first choices in a carry pistol. A Glock is an ugly gun but they are accurate and they go bang when you pull the trigger.

    A Glock 9mm is a range gun.

  17. People that think a Glock is the best shooting gun ever have never fired a Browning high power.

    1. I had to explain to my kids that they used to make 9mm pistols out of metal! 🤣

    2. I LOVE the Browning Hi Power!...but bet my life on my companion G19 of 34 years. Seems to fit my hand, that's useful.
For the 9mm naysayers, you haven't kept up with projectile technology over the last 20 years. Emergency room MD's say there's no discernible difference in wound damage between the majog calibers.

  18. The Glock .45ACPs are my preference. Easier to load magazines, especially after dark

  21. So I know we all have favorites and we will disagree on what they are.
My perspective is this, Glock is what I have, it's what I prefer. I have a G27 and G22 which means they are.40 caliber but I also have both a complete G26 and G17 slide assembly and magazines which are 9mm for you non Glock people out there. SoI can and do shoot 9mm and.40, basically 4 guns on 2 different frames... I don't know, maybe some other brands have the same capabilities but I don't need to go looking..
    Carry on

    2. My neighbor has a Glock 22 in 40 S&W and that thing shoots good. I'm not crazy about the ergonomics, and the trigger is much better after he polished it. But not as good as a standard 1911 trigger. 40 has decent power, and when he puts in a 357 sig barrel it's really nice. That being said, I do prefer other pistols though. It's the ergonomics, looks, and the Glock bulge left on the casings. I've heard the bulge is the cause of the Glock kaboom after the metal fatigue from reloading the same cases a number of times.
      But they are solid guns.

    3. I understand, I came to semi-autos from double action revolvers so the trigger was never a big issue for me. I've done the polishing and put a Overlook trigger assembly in along with a Zev 3.5 connects to both. A striker fired will never be as sharp as a single action auto but the revolvers weren't either.
I recently purchased Springfield semi-auto and I like it but it's not going to be my carry weapon

  22. Never shot a Glock before several weeks ago. don't have an issue with them, just never had the urge to buy one. My neighbor who didn't have a gun purchased a Glock 19. The only place to shoot locally is the sportsmans club so I took him there as a guest until he could get his own membership. He was all over the target so I put a couple down range and confirmed it was him not the gun. The only thing negative i can say is that they are aesthetically unappealing. for some perverse reason I even find my ugly Beretta px4 storms more appealing.

  24. Have a G17 that might be nearly the oldest existing one on the planet. Picked up a Glock 19X a couple of years ago, and couldn't put it down. Sorry Springfield 1911, and XDS.

  25. The only Glock I’ve ever owned is a 43X and I’m just not crazy about it. I’m glad we have so many choices. Right now my favorite carry gun is my, new to me, CZ 75. It just fits and in the limited time on the trigger so far has gone well. I know it’s not the most intelligent thing to do but I change up from time to time. The choices are my P365, XDS in 45, P239 in 40 cal but more often than not I’m wearing my P238 in .380. I can’t imagine living where someone, anyone tells me what I can carry. Open carry and constitutional carry here in the heart of Dixie. The free state of Alabama.
