In March of 1850, Dr. Thaddeus Hildreth led a prospecting party that discovered gold at this location. When word of the discovery spread, hundreds of miners started arriving at the scene. "Hildreth's Diggings" was the name of the original camp, and by mid-year thousands of miners were working the gold placers here.

Columbia's just up the road a ways from Riverbank City of Action, where I used to live. It's mostly a tourist destination nowadays, but still has a large number of original structures.
The New and the Old:
ReplyDeleteColumbia Airport is home to a CalFire air attack base.
Historic Columbia can be seen in the movie Pale Rider. It's where the Preacher goes to retrieve his pistols from a Wells Fargo safety deposit box.
I like these stories you dig up.

I took my sons to Jamestown and Columbia different years as parent volunteers in the early 90s for elementary school trips there. They spent time gold panning and other things learing their history.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I went there on a weekday, there were always a couple school buses there for kids' field trips. It's a great place for both kids and adults to learn about the Gold Rush.
