The story is not fully true, his hippo went through puberty. It was the rut and it became aggressive and bit him then trampled him in the river. According to an article i read years ago when it happened.
Eh, herbivores eat meat all the time. From bugs on leaves to horses addicted to eating honeybee brood to cows eating snakes in the Australian outback. Just because it's an herbivore doesn't mean it'll never eat meat.
There is a difference between a domesticated animal and a tamed animal. Wild animals that are tamed almost always revert to their nature. The truth is that most animals eat along a spectrum between carnivore and herbivore. There is plenty of evidence of hippos eating meat.
Was in RSA last year and this hippo comes right into the house. https://www.jessicahippo.com/ She has a habit of breaking mirrors off of cars in the driveway. Guy said she doesn't even notice snapping them off...yes we fed her and gave her tea.
