I'd always heard that donkeys like to have their ears scratched. But the burro on the ranch next door to me does NOT like his ears touched. He'll drop the carrot I've given him to swat my hand away if I scratch him too near his ears.
There is a wide spot in Colorado called Platte-it is at the confluence of the North Fork and the South Fork of the South Platte River, right before the river runs down a canyon and into Denver. Population around 10 people with another 10 donkeys or burros that roam wherever they damn well please, including the narrow road going in and out of "town". The old Platte Hotel still stands but has not enjoyed its fabled history for at least the last 60 years or so-it was the first stop on the old railroad that went up to Leadville and was popular for the moneyed to get out of town when things got hot in the summer before air conditioning was a thing.

ReplyDeleteSomebody probably 'eared' him and now he's wary. Go slow and work your way up to his poll, after while he'll realize you're not gonna hurt him.
