  7. I watched a Pileated woodpecker do that to a tree, if they attack the tree like that it's already dead & full of beetles.

    2. I remember the first time I was one of them out hunting. I never knew what they were and had to look it up, in a real book. I must admit that I was sort of shocked that first time, I had never seen such a huge and colorful bird before. This was in the early to mid 1980's.
I have since seen them a number of times, but they never shocked me like that first time.

    3. #3 - Man, some lumber company ought to hire that bird. Wages should be cheep :^)

    4. Pigpen, we've got at least 2 pair living nearby. One of the males went to work on a pecan stump in my backyard. I wish he'd finish it.

    5. Based on what is coming out of the tree, it seems to be healthy.

    6. They are the beavers of the bird world. They come down from the mountains every year, tear the crap out of the trees, and leave. When they find a big hollow tree and it sounds like an Ak-47.

    7. Then why did I have a pileated woodpecker do that to a pressure-treated post on my porch?

      Delete
    8. it depends on the kind of pileated.

  8. #3 Damned woodpecker. Hope the tree falls on it. One has nearly destroyed the wooden shed I have outside and I had to have spikes put on my roof to keep them from pecking on it as well.

    1. Try piano wire. About .020 diameter. Hang it from the strake boards down the side of the house, usually the north side, on the corners. Three should do it. Anchor it with 3 in" #10 stanchions, dont pull tight, let it have a gentle curl.
You wont see it, but they can, makes it hard to light up on the side of the house.
Been quiet for ten years now. But there around pounding on much else.

  10. #7 actual hero in action, yet, sadly, most people today think #8 is more of a hero.

    1. I would argue that neither are heroes, both are people of service and know that the world outside of themselves requires an act of service or kindness to be a fully responsible adult. Children and animals deserve our care.

    2. #7 & 8... people doing what needs to be done. Bike guy didn't have to "protect "her, yet he did (as much as I hate "most" cyclists) Bravo Zulu...
Dog in Ice... I'd be in there with it getting it out of the water. (probably die) but I couldn't live without knowing I did what I could.

    3. The dude on the bike is a hero ONLY if the girl was talking to Xiden.

    4. Bet that dog is terrified. First he's freezing and about to drown, and then this big, loud orange thing with orange creatures in it, swoops in and plucks him out of the water by the scruff of the neck, to be carried off to who knows where.
      Mondays.

    5. Yeah, better to just let him die, huh?

#4 Sooper Sekrit hovering helicopter project. Will scare the pants off the bad guys. Or speed adjusted video camera catching the blades in exactly the same position every time. Used to do something like this shooting video screens in 767 flight desks for Boeing. Each screen could have numerous separate display items refreshing at different rates. We could tweet the beta cam's shutter speed and get most of them to synch up or seem to be only very slowly refreshing.
