Sounds to me like somebody got tired of that godawful screeching
WALNUT GROVE, Calif. — Nearly all of the peacocks at the historic Ryde Hotel in Walnut Grove have gone missing within the past week, prompting an investigation by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.
Grandpa was expert at all things bird & pretty savvy about agriculture in general; raced pigeons, raised all kinds of exotic birds & barnyard animals, so we were blessed with home grown Squab, Quail, Pheasant (both a challenge to even hatch in captivity), Pea fowl, Duck, & , of course, Turkey & Chicken. Peas are mostly all really dark meat and a little stringy. CC
So are chickens. I wouldn't above trying a bite. I have ducks they only get loud if low on water. All foul are nasty. Guess that's why they are named foul. Duck meat is so good
Our neighbor has 14 full grown & 2 chicks on their 11 acres. They only screech a lot during mating season (spring). They wander onto our property daily to eat birdseed under our feeders.
I was at a campground in Santa Clarita for a couple nights a long time ago and the place had a few peacocks. I had no idea they were there and had even less of an idea what sort of noise they made until about sunrise the morning after I got there. I thought there were several women getting attacked and tortured! I launched myself out of my tent to go rescue them. Followed the sound and found the birds. I was pretty relieved that I didn't have to do any rescuing...
My idiot S-I-L blamed my dog for all of her pea fowl disappearing within one week. Never mind that she lives on a 1,500 acre ranch bordering huge parcels of open land.
The pea don't have enough meat to make it worthwhile. Stringy too. I've eaten just about kind of animal native to North America. Pea rates with the nastier.

Are peacock good eating? Because somewhere not too far away there are a few, and I'm a bit curious.
ReplyDeleteThey'll make a turd.

They're like pheasant. A little gamey like duck. But still far better than Mallard Duck.
DeleteThey're tastier than pidgeon and Illegal aliens gotta eat when their food stamps run out.
ReplyDeletePeacock fighting Is that a thing ? Overactive imagination maybe.... And yes they are beautiful but noisy.....

Loud & dirty, but probably pretty tasty.

DeletePeahens make good eating. And cockfighting? STFU.
ReplyDeleteWe could hope that it was a feral cougar that will find other politically correct sources of protein when it's run out of peacocks.....
ReplyDeleteA lot like chicken only bigger. Goes well with a fruit based sauce like orange or raspberry.
ReplyDeleteTastes like chicken...

ReplyDeleteThe only bird more obnoxious than guinea fowl. My neighbor got rid of his after one week.
ReplyDeleteCould be coyotes, they have no problem eating turkeys.
Guinea make great yard alarms though, if anything moves in the yard you'll know if

Like a lot of game birds the taste really depends on what the birds are eating.
DeleteSame with fish. Had some pond-raised trout where the owner used dogfood as a fish food. And said trout tasted totally nasty.
