You'll see some area along the California coastal cliffs clad in concrete to help forestall the erosion. The trouble is that every barrier eventually has a edge or some other weak spot that begins to give way. I've even seen a barrier wall standing free and clear, the earth behind it eroded away, kept from falling only by a (blocked) drainage pipe at the top. Drainage failure behind the wall caused the erosion that killed the system.
There was a house on a hill in Spanish Fort Alabama, east side of Mobile Bay, that was hanging kinda precariously close to a wash out last time I was in the area JD
