Don't forget your ear protection

The U.S. Air National Guard has purchased half a million dollars worth of portable LRAD acoustic systems, which are commonly used by police to quell protests and civil unrest, ensuring that the sonic weapons will be deployed “throughout” America during upcoming national emergencies and other crises.

The video above demonstrates how the portable LRAD works even at 200 feet high and amidst the noise of a helicopter.
LRAD Corporation has received an order worth $550,00 from the Air National Guard to ship LRAD 100X devices this quarter.
“With this order, LRAD systems will be in use by every major force of the Department of Defense,” Tom Brown, president and CEO of LRAD told Government Security News. “The Air National Guard will be deploying the LRAD 100X systems throughout the country to support and assist civil authorities in the event of severe natural or man-made disasters. LRAD systems have proven highly effective in communicating warnings, instructions and commands over wide areas before, during, and in the aftermath of catastrophes.”
As well as being powerful communication devices, LRADs emit piercing sounds that amount to nothing less than auditory torture, and serve to disperse people from geographical areas, breaking up demonstrations and other gatherings.
Larger versions of the LRAD, previously used against Somali pirates and insurgents in Afghanistan, are increasingly being deployed inside America. In 2009, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department deployed an LRAD against people going to a town hall meeting.

IRVINE (CA) – The city will do everything possible to protect its neighborhoods from coyotes, Irvine Mayor Sukhee Kang pledged Tuesday night.
His comments come after an incident in which a large coyote charged at an Irvine father at the front door of his townhome. The man says that the predator was after his 1-year-old son, who was sick and had been crying for hours inside.

An Irvine man says a coyote charged him recently, but stopped short of attacking him.

Reports of coyotes killing pets are commonplace in Irvine, said longtime resident Suzanne Nicklaus, whose cat was eaten last week by two or three of the predators.
Nicklaus pointed to her own loss and to the incident with the man and his son in asking the City Council on Tuesday night to disseminate warnings and information to residents and to control or thin the local coyote population.
Irvine is so safe, she said, that it leads residents to believe they can wander through parks and open spaces into the night with their children.
"That's a great thing, because we are not afraid of human predators, but I think we need to be more aware that the four-legged ones are in our area," she said. "I want to feel safe when I go to the Woodbridge pools at night or when I walk in the morning."

Beautiful elk

My friend's father and his wife went on a two week horseback hunt in Montana this summer. I though I'd share a couple shots of his elk. He's 78 and still at it!
Hope you enjoy the pics.

Either that or it's one of those black wolves I've been getting reports about.

Some folks have no sense of humor

Lisa's phone out on the patio started ringing and she was in the bedroom resting her back. I checked it out and it was her son Art who lives back in Tennessee.
"What the fuck, man? How ya doin'?" I answered the phone and started towards the bedroom.
"I'm doin' good, man. Just getting up and around, got all fucked up last night" he replies.
I make it to the bedroom and mouth the word 'Art' to Lisa. She whispers back "It's his birthday today."
"Yeah man, a couple of my buddies picked me up and we had a big bonfire. It was a good time." He's going on about his birthday party as I'm standing there in front of Lisa.
"So how much is your bail?" I asked and watched Lisa levitate out of bed when she heard that.
I started laughing and handed the phone to her. "Get the fuck out of here, asshole. Bail...... you motherfucker....."

A watchpig?

-- The police SWAT team searched a home in south Modesto on Friday morning and found marijuana, several firearms, pit bulls and an aggressive pig.
Anonymous tips about a suspected outdoor marijuana grow led officers to the 100 block of Glenn Avenue about 8:30 a.m., said interim Police Chief Gene Balentine.
Officers using a loudspeaker instructed the residents to leave the house. At least two men and two women came out. One of the women was allowed to go back inside to retrieve her child, Balentine said.A relative who wouldn't give his name said a man, woman and 4-year-old boy live in the home. The adult residents were detained and taken away in handcuffs.Martin Martinez, 51, later was arrested on suspicion of marijuana cultivation, possession for sale and weapons charges.
Before SWAT team members entered the residence, they set off a flash-bang grenade to get the attention of anyone else who might be inside.
At least 16 surveillance cameras surrounded the property, mounted on the home and trees in the front and back yard. Two pit bulls acted as guard dogs, but neither was as aggressive as a large pig found on the property.
"I've been doing this a long time and I have never seen a guard pig, but it was a pretty vicious pig," Balentine said.
The pig was tranquilized, but still lashed out at officers. It took six SWAT team officers to carry the pig to an animal control vehicle. It was later euthanized; the dogs were taken to the animal shelter.

Authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a 32-year-old woman in the suburban San Diego area after she allegedly hit a Border Patrol agent with her car.
Investigators said Valeria Alvarado ran down the agent with her car as border patrol agents were in a Chula Vista neighborhood to serve a felony warrant on Friday.
The agent said he had no choice but to defend himself and fired at Alvarado get her to stop the car.
Alvarado was hit by five bullets.

According to eye witnesses, the shooting left the mother of five with bullet holes in her face, arms, and chest.
"She literally ran our agent down, the agent actually was impacted, was hit by the vehicle and carried several hundred yards on the hood before fearing for his life did discharge his weapon to get the vehicle to stop," said Border Patrol Deputy Chief Rodney Scott.
Alvarado's husband, Gilbert Alvarado said he wants the shooting investigated.
"I want justice. Yes. Whoever shot my wife, that guy whoever that is, that guy needs to get shot," he said.
Alvarado's family called the killing senseless.
"Where's the evidence that my wife threatened a trained officer? You know? He's a trained officer to use lethal force, shoot my wife like that and just not even call an ambulance?" said Gilbert Alvarado.
The FBI and Chula Vista Police are investigating the shooting. Officials have not released the name of the agent involved in the incident.

You know, at this point in time and hearing what I have so far, I'm going to side with the Border Patrol agent on this one. If I was hit by a car and carried on the hood for several hundred yards after warning the driver to stop, I'd cap her ass too.
As far as Mr. Alvarado goes, I'm going to make myself a target for some shitty comments - he has a typical hispanic attitude. He's blaming everybody but who was wrong. He's demanding evidence that his wife threatened an officer after she carried somebody several hundred yards after hitting him. If that ain't a threat, I don't know what is.

DHS agent faces felony charges......

ST. LOUIS • A St. Louis teen who authorities say is a member of a gang called the "Obama Boyz" has been charged with two shootings on Saturday.
Anthony Jamal Lee, 18, fired at a group of people from the window of a Grand Prix at 2:17 p.m., according to charges. A 13-year-old boy was struck in the side of his body and had to be hospitalized; a 17-year-old boy was grazed by bullets on his face and arm.
Lee, according to authorities, then fired from his car at two passengers in another Grand Prix, grazing one of them in the back.
One shooting occurred at the 3200 block of Oriole Avenue, and the other nearby at Harney and Beacon avenues.
Lee, who was charged Friday in St. Louis Circuit Court, faces a mix of 10 felony counts of first-degree assault, armed criminal action and firing shots from a vehicle. Judge Theresa Burke set $100,000 cash bail.
Authorities said Lee is a documented member of the "Obama Boyz" gang, but did not elaborate.

"I cannot comment on that"?

The North Carolina mom of a 7-year-old girl with Down Syndrome is accusing a teacher of cutting off several inches of her daughter's beloved hair without her consent.
"Most of the time, she's always brushing her hair, always doing something with her hair," Jesslyn's mother, Jessica Stirewalp, told ABC News' Charlotte affiliate, WSOC-TV.
Stirewalp claims that a Millbridge Elementary School teacher in Rowan County, N.C., cut Jesslyn's hair in class on Friday.
"Her assistant teacher calls me and says, 'I hope you don't mind, but I cut your daughter's hair because she got food in it,'" Stirewalp said. "Of course, I got mad, but I asked her how much, and she said four inches."
Stirewalp says that she was shocked when Jesslyn got home from school.
"Instead of four inches, it was more [like] eight inches. And when she walked in the house, you could tell that she thought she was in trouble," Stirewalp told WSOC. "I mean, it hurts my feelings, and I know it hurts her feelings."

The mom said that she has heard conflicting explanations for why Jesslyn's hair was cut. She said the teacher initially told her on the phone that it was because of food in Jesslyn's hair. But a letter from the teacher said that Jesslyn wouldn't stop taking her hair down, so the teacher trimmed it, Stirewalp said.
When asked about the incident, school principal Christopher Smith told ABCNews.com, "I cannot comment on that." He directed questions to the Rowan-Salisbury School district spokeswoman, who did not respond to a request for comment.
Jesslyn's family said the haircut has changed the little girl.
"She would look at it and she would say, 'Pretty,'" her grandmother Mary Poole told WSOC. "She doesn't even get in front of the mirror anymore."

Gotta call bullshit on the teacher. Sorry, I can't think of any food that warrant cutting. Wash it out, freeze it out or pull it out but don't cut it out. Why didn't she just send the little girl home?

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Mexican navy personnel say they have found a radio communications network operated by a drug cartel, complete with a 300-foot (90-meter) transmission tower.
The navy says the radio equipment and several towers were found in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz. The system reached into the neighboring state of Tamaulipas.
The navy says the system was detected last week and marines moved in to dismantle it.
Friday's statement does not say which cartel had operated the system. But the Gulf cartel and the Zetas gang operate in the area and have been known to operate such sophisticated communications systems.

The article doesn't say how long that communications system has been operating but it just goes to show how serious Mexico is about taking care of business. They'd rather try and push their bullshit gun laws on us than find and fight the source of their problems.

Firefight

No rounds penetrated his body armor, and he made it home with no permanent injuries. This happened in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.
From the cameraman:
” I got a hit a total of 4 times. My helmet cam died and i made it down the mountain on my own. I was also hit in the side of my helmet and my eye pro was shot off of my face. We were doing overwatch on the village to recon and gather intel. I was point heading down the face of the hill with the LT. when we got hit. the rest of the squad was pinned down by machine gun fire. I didn’t start the video until a few mins into the firefight for obvious reasons. I came out into the open to draw fire so my squad could get to safety.”
“A round struck the tube by my hand of the 203 grenade launcher which knocked it out of my hands. When I picked the rifle back up it was still functional but the grenade launcher tube had a nice sized 7.62 cal bullet hole in it and was rendered useless. “

Coyote monogamy

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) — Coyotes living in cities don't ever stray from their mates, and stay with each other till death do them part, according to a new study.
The finding sheds light on why the North American cousin of the dog and wolf, which is originally native to deserts and plains, is thriving today in urban areas.
Scientists with Ohio State University who genetically sampled 236 coyotes in the Chicago area over a six-year period found no evidence of polygamy -- of the animals having more than one mate -- nor of one mate ever leaving another while the other was still alive.
The rest of the story here. Read the article, it's actually pretty interesting.

*****

I knew that, it's the same with coyotes everywhere. That's why when you kill one, you always blow a ki-yi call right away so it's mate will be drawn in by it - sounds just like that puppy you backed over last week. Yeah, so shoot one, blast a ki-yi or three and get back on the rifle and start scanning for the mate running in at full speed. You can pick up a double sometimes that way.
Downright heartbreaking, ain't it?

It's tough being a farmer nowadays

A farmer was selling his peaches door to door.
He knocked on a door and a shapely 30-something woman dressed in a very sheer negligee answered the door.
He raised his basket to show her the peaches and asked, "Would you like to buy some peaches?"
She pulled the top of the negligee to one side and asked, "are they as firm as this?"
He nodded his head and said, "Yes ma'am," and a little tear ran from his eye.
Then she pulled the other side of her negligee off asking, "Are they nice and pink like this?"
The farmer said, "Yes," and another tear came from the other eye.
Then she unbuttoned the bottom of her negligee and asked, "Are they as fuzzy as this?"
He again said, "Yes," and broke down crying.
She asked, "Why on earth are you crying?"
Drying his eyes he replied, "The drought got my corn, the flood got my soy beans, a tornado leveled my barn, and now I think I'm gonna get fucked out of my peaches.

Wirecutter - The Early Years

All right guys, I get it.

I swear, I have gotten 19 (count 'em, NINETEEN) fucking emails warning me of the upcoming pork shortage today. Damn, y'all must think I like bacon or something......
Sorry guys, Hiswiserangel beat you to it last night and I posted it as soon as I got it so y'all can stock up while you can. There is no shame in freezing bacon for storage.
Matter of fact, you might want to think about going to your local hog farmer or meat processor (you know, where you take your deer) and check out the prices on a half or whole hog. There's huge savings that way and most of them will butcher, wrap and freeze it for you. A lot of places will even rent you freezer space if you don't have a chest freezer or something along those lines.

Stole the video from Irish

I remember a couple of years ago I was chasing coyotes around the internet and somewhere, somehow I ran across a quiz titled "Are you a bacon addict?" So naturally I had to take it....... The very first question was 'How many times a week do you eat bacon? A)Twice a week B) Three times, Four times, etc.
I thought to myself Fuck, this must be a misprint - they must mean how many times a day. But I continued on and finally realized that it wasn't a misprint, these fucking lightweights were serious! Damn, I was eating bacon at least 3 times a day back then. Hell, for lunch Sunday Lisa packed me a smoked ham and bacon sandwich. That fucker rocked, too.
But I've mellowed some since then, I actually am down to 4 or 5 times a week. I don't know why, but I am.

No wonder the Irish are so pissy

What's next? Sterilization for 'undesirables'?

Back to school checklist: note books? Check. Class assignments? Check. Plan B morning-after pills? Check. Wait, what? It's true: Students as young as 14 can get birth control at 13 New York City high schools without parental consent.
Although condoms have been provided free for years, this pilot program, unpublicized for the last year, gives students access to oral contraceptives, along with the morning-after pill, which can prevent an unintended pregnancy up to 72 hours after unprotected sex.

The story goes on to say that parents can 'opt-out' if they sign a form indicating their desire to do so, but how in the fuck can they opt-out if they don't know about it?

OH GOD NO!!!!!

Might want to get your fill of ham this year, because "a world shortage of pork and bacon next year is now unavoidable," according to an industry trade group.

Blame the drought conditions that blazed through the corn and soybean crop this year. Less feed led to herds declining across the European Union “at a significant rate,” according to the National Pig Assn. in Britain.

And the trend “is being mirrored around the world,” according to a release (hat tip to the Financial Times).

The answer to an age-old question

Mowed the lawn today, and after doing so I sat down and had a couple nice cold beers. The day was really quite beautiful, and the brew facilitated some deep thinking on various topics.
Finally I thought about an age old question: Is giving birth more painful than getting kicked in the Nuts?
Women always maintain that giving birth is way more painful than a guy getting kicked in the nuts.
Well, after another beer, and some heavy deductive thinking, I have come up with the answer to that question.
Getting kicked in the nuts is more painful than having a baby; and here is the reason for my conclusion
A year or so after giving birth, a woman will often say, "it might be nice to have another child."
On the other hand, you never hear a guy say, "You know, I think I would like another kick in the nuts."

I rest my case.

What's good for them......

For many of these avid supporters, who are dependent and appreciative of Obama, it is no longer what is good for the country but what is good for them. America has been bought and it should be of no surprise to anyone that Obama is polling so high and has a high probability of winning re-election despite terrible performance. His performance is just not important to his supporters.

PNW Arms

Mark from PNW Arms contacted me a couple of weeks ago and asked if I'd link his ammo site. Sure, not a problem. After I took a look around and linked it he got back to me, thanked me and asked for an address so he could send me a sample of his wares.
I figured on a box of 20. What I got instead was a box of 590.
No shit.

He sent me a couple of boxes of 20 of his TacOps ammo, 10 boxes of 50 of the Defensive Training ammo and a box of 50 of "cold" tracer ammo, all in 45 ACP.

Let's take a look at the TacOps first. From their site at PNW Arms:

Tactical Operations. Any mission, anytime, anywhere…precision guaranteed. You do what others can’t, in places they won’t go with an exactitude that shocks your adversary and awes your admirers. The TacOps® series from PNW Arms was designed specifically for Tier One operators like you who demand the absolute pinnacle in ballistics performance. PNW Arms TacOps® rounds are precision engineered, solid copper bullets built with top end terminal ballistics to provide optimal performance during go time. Utilizing the highest quality brass and filled with precisely metered, clean burning powder, TacOps® rounds provide reliable, maximum expansion with complete weight retention while maintaining standard chamber pressures.
• Lighter bullet design results in faster speeds and a flatter trajectory
• Lighter bullets also means faster sight recovery resulting in more rounds on target for devastating effect
• Extremely low-flash powder to preserve night vision

Our rounds are designed to have the fastest possible velocity without exceeding the safe pressure levels as defined by the Small Arms Ammunition Manufacturers Institute (SAAMI) which mitigates substantial risks (such as excessive recoil, over penetration, muzzle climb and stress) associated with +P rounds.

Then there's the Defensive Training ammo. When I got it I looked at it - looks like a regular 45 HP to me and their site lists the same basic ballistics as their TacOps so I shot Mark an email asking what was 'practice' about it. His reply was that it mimics their TacOps ammo in recoil, ballistics, everything except the actual projectile. The whole concept is being able to train with what you carry at a reduced cost.

Again, from their site:
The Defensive Training series of bullets is engineered to exactly match the performance of the TacOps® round and enable train-with-what-you-carry at a fraction of the cost. These Defensive Training rounds mimic the recoil, point-of-aim and point-of-impact of the TacOps® rounds precisely, at around half the cost. In fact, our Defensive Trainers are incredibly popular with all types of shooters as range rounds because of their high performance and pleasant shooting characteristics.
PNW’s Defensive Training rounds use American made precision bullets, exactly metered clean burning powder and come in two versions – new and re-manufactured brass for additional cost savings.
At PNW, we understand your needs as a shooter, an operator and a trainer. With our TacOps and Defensive Training lineup, we meet you where you live by providing both unrelenting performance and unequaled value in the next generation of American Weapons Science.

Available in 9mm, 10mm, .40 and .45 calibers our Defensive Training rounds are built on state of the art loading presses in a controlled manufacturing environment. Every round is hand inspected for defects and chamber gauged to guarantee flawless operation in action.

Finally, here's a description of their 230 gr hardball Cold Tracer from their site:
Tracers provide a wealth of information to the shooter. They allow the shooter to see the current bullet trajectory, providing instant visual feedback to allow for corrections to target. With modern tracers there are also inherent drawbacks such as: burning phosphorous which can set things on fire, not the best thing for barrels, gives away your position, and can only be on certain rounds since they affect terminal and exterior ballistics. Cold Tracer solves these problems with a non-exothermic substance that is applied the base of every bullet allowing instant visual feedback on a per round basis in low to no light conditions. This allows a shooter to walk in their rounds to the target and hit previously unheard of ranges with conventional munitions. Moreover, only the shooter or those on the firing line is able to see the tracer due to its application process. This round can greatly enhance the shooting ability of new shooters by allowing them to focus on round placement and feel versus learning more advanced sighting techniques. For professionals, this can greatly enhance CQB effectiveness and other tactics.
  • Only visible from the shooter’s perspective
  • No effects on Exterior Ballistics
  • No effects on Terminal Ballistics
  • No effects on barrel
  • Non-exothermic (it does not generate heat)
  • Bio-safe material
  • Safe for indoor and outdoor use
  • Only use in low-light to no-light conditions
  • Works great with NVGs
  • Greatly increases range and accuracy
  • Visually assess shooting performance with instant feedback from common shooting mistakes
  • Every round in your magazine is a Cold Tracer now

I was up in the hills yesterday but didn't shoot due to deer season being open - I don't want to fuck up somebody's chance to get a deer because of my shooting and the fucking woods are crawling with Game Wardens and federal rangers and the less contact I have with LEO, the happier I am.
There is a severe shortage of ranges here in Kalifornia unless you belong to a gun club so I can't give you a range report at the moment, but as soon as the season is over next month I'm going to burn off most of Mark's gift and give a brutally honest review.

In the meantime, you can visit his website at http://www.pnwarms.com/  There's a wealth of information there including ballistic tables for all the calibers offered.
It's also linked in at my "Shit That Might Come In Handy" column in my sidebar.

Go on over, have a look around at their offerings in both handgun and rifle calibers and see if they have something for you.
Oh, one more very important thing - their customer service is top notch. Any questions I had were answered via email within minutes.

Bloodhounds that tracked an escaped double murderer were able to follow his scent for only a short distance, making authorities fear today that the convict could have been picked up by an accomplice and could be "hundreds of miles away."
James Ladd, 51, slipped away from the Tillery Correctional Cente, a minimum security prison farm, on Sunday morning while doing farm work. Authorities found his abandoned tractor at 10 a.m., said Keith Acree, North Carolina prison spokesperson.
A helicopter flew over rural Tillery, N.C., Sunday night searching for the convicted murderer, who was given three consecutive life sentences in 1981. Bloodhounds also assisted in the ground search, however Acree said they were only able to follow Ladd's scene for a short distance.
"At this point it's been 24 hours, so if he got a ride he could be hundreds of miles away at this point," Acree said.

New toys/tools

I got a nice package in the mail last week from the links that I put up a couple of weeks ago (I'll repost them at the bottom) and in it was 2 things that I refuse to go up in the mountains without. One is a nice knife and the other is a small hatchet.
Let's look at them one at a time.

The NW Ranger by SOG
This knife is just downright sexy. I bought one a couple of years ago for about 90 bucks and I swear, I couldn't keep my hands off of it. Well balanced, solid and razor sharp.
Now, my little brother is graduating from AIT in about a month and I wanted to give him a nice gift and had the NW Ranger in mind, but I'll be damned if he was getting mine so I ordered him a new one.

Here's the description of the knife from the site:
The SOG NW Ranger S240 is the ultimate hunting knife. It has a 5.2 inch AUS 8 stainless steel clip point blade with ground bevels and a textured kraton handle. The handle of the NW Ranger has a hole drilled where you can use a lanyard. A sheath is included with the SOG NW Ranger for easy carrying.
http://www.sog-knives.net/sog-knife.php?prodnum=S240

What I really love about the knife is the kraton handle. When you're skinning something out, the handle tends to get slippery with blood and this handle allows you to keep your grip.
And the sheath? Leather. I love a leather sheath. I know they're not as durable as cordura, but damn, there's this thing called traditional...... Oil it, take care of it and it'll last you for years.
The bonus about this knife? It's only 50 bucks here, about half of what I originally paid for mine.

I also got a SOG Fasthawk.

A small 'hawk is invaluable in the mountains. Use it for cutting small brush or kindling, making a shelter, processing your meat, the uses are endless. If you get too bored hanging around camp, you can always use the spike to try to pin those pesky chipmunks up against a tree......

Again, the description from the website:
If the Tactical Tomahawk is larger than you want then try the 19 ounce SOG FastHawk F06T-N. This tomahawk ax is just over 12 inches long and is great for a number of tasks including throwing, pounding, shaving, prying, digging, notching, opening, chopping, and breaking. The FastHawk was built to last because it has a 420 stainless head that is mounted to ballistic polymer, and then secured with heavy bolts and wrapped with a steel ferrule. A nylon sheath is included that can be mounted to your belt or attached to your backpack or gear.
http://www.sog-knives.net/sog-knife.php?prodnum=F06T-N

The size is what appeals to me. The older I get, the less weight I want to carry. At one foot long and a little over a pound, it'll fit in a Git Kit or backpack almost unnoticed.
It comes with a sheath that'll strap onto your belt or pack, securing the hawk with 3 snaps. The first thing I did was to check out how easily it'll fall out and be lost if one of the snaps comes undone and found that you have to unsnap all 3 fasteners to easily remove it.
The cost? Another bargain at 20 bucks.

Check out the bargains here too:

The Daily Caller has obtained a complete audio recording of the October 19, 1998 Loyola College forum on community organizing and policymaking during which a future President Barack Obama said he favored the government redistribution of wealth. The audio demonstrates the context of that remark and reveals other far-left positions that Obama held as a state senator.
Those positions encompass issues as wide-ranging as gun control, universal health care and welfare reform. Obama also said he viewed welfare recipients and “the working poor” as “a majority coalition” that could be mobilized to help advance progressive policies and elect their champions.
