Fish traps

I'm no good at catching fish one at a time, but I grew up on a commercial fishing boat. Here's a couple of fish traps- the first one is good for streams- using closely-spaced poles can substitute for a net as a way to get fish to congregate for a short while and increase your catch with rod and reel or a spear. You can also net off streams if you've got a net and take everything and the poles can be stacked nearby when not in use. You can't leave it too long, as any trash or branches can screw it all up as they come downstream.

For saltwater,  I used to help tend a sardine weir in downeast Maine, too, when I was in college. This is a permanent shoreline trap requiring an investment in time and 3-4 people with a good boat and access to nets.  They trap fish and then you  periodically corral the fish and heave them out of the water. An adult and a kid can tend and maintain the weir, but you need 4 strong people to build it and hang the nets initially. Looks more intimidating than it is. The picture shows a big ass one that provided about 10% of the US's canned sardines in the 50's and 60's. A manageable weir is 5,000-7,000 sq feet.

Depending on where someone is, a serviceable crab trap, or crayfish trap if in fresh water, can be made from a 5 gallon bucket with a lid if you can bury it to where the lip is only 1-2 inches above the gravel. The hole in the lid needs to be only 2-3 times the body size of whatever you're looking to catch.  You poke 1-2 small holes an inch or two above the bottom, insert string with a slipknot at the end (to hold bait), put the lid on and bury it.

Thanks, Paul. I appreciate you taking the time to teach us this - I learned something new too.

I probably should've reminded him that at least we have the opportunity to shoot back, after all we're not the ones that allowed ourselves to be disarmed.

I knew Putin, Billary and Obama were tight

Boris A. Berezovsky, once the richest and most powerful of the so-called oligarchs who dominated post-Soviet Russia, and a close ally of Boris N. Yeltsin who helped install Vladimir V. Putin as president but later exiled himself to London after a bitter falling out with the Kremlin, died Saturday.

Mr. Berezovsky’s death was first reported in a post on Facebook by his son-in-law Egor Schuppe and was confirmed by Alexander Dobrovinsky, a lawyer who had represented him.

Mr. Dobrovinsky wrote in Russian on his Facebook page: “Just got a call from London. Boris Berezovsky has committed suicide. The man was complex. An act of desperation? Impossible to live poor? A series of blows? I am afraid that no one will know the truth.”

Suicide. Right. You bet. Putin's been taking lessons from our politicians. Or they've been taking lessons from him and his predecessors.

On this day in history.....

1775 – American Revolutionary War: Patrick Henry delivers his famous speech -”give me liberty or give me death” at St. John’s Church in Richmond, Virginia. Today’s version: “Give me earmarks. Lots of earmarks, and I’ll vote my own momma out of house and home…”

1933 – The Reichstag passes the Enabling Act of 1933, making Adolf Hitler dictator of Germany. He didn’t just walk in one day and say “Hi, I’m your new dictator.” No, he had a willing and complicit majority in the national legislature. Just like Obama wants.

Wirecutter's Shoe Porn

Had to down and buy me some fucking work boots today. The old ones still had another 6 months to a year in them but they're insulated and damn, I didn't want to go through another 100+ degree summer in them. And yes, that's 550 cord for laces - best laces in the world, you wear the boots out before they break.

You'll have to excuse CharlieGodammit the Attention Whore.

I wonder..... my buddies are going to react Monday when they realized somebody glued their lockers shut before I left for vacation.

That's socialized medicine for ya

-- A Canadian man was just scratching what he thought was an old itch this week when it turned out to be a knife blade that had been buried in his back for almost three years.
Billy McNeely said this week it all goes back to an April, 2010, birthday party in McNeely's home town of Fort Good Hope, Northwest Territories. McNeely got into a fight over an arm-wrestling contest and was stabbed five times. A doctor stitched him up back then and never took X-Rays.
Ever since, McNeely would set off metal detector and he's had a lump in his back where the knife went in. It never stopped nagging him and grew more painful this week.
Doctors dug out a blade measuring about 2.7 inches (7 centimeters).

Patriots helping Patriots catch some fish

Okay, after reading the comments I've already gotten in the fishing preps post from yesterday, it's real obvious that there are people out there that are better qualified to write it than me. I'm a sport fisherman, pretty much limited to largemouth bass, trout and catfish. Never caught a pike, muskie or sturgeon. I can survive on my catch, but not thrive.
Anybody that would like to write a guest post on the subject is welcome to do so. Please email it to Length doesn't matter, make it as long or short as you'd like. I would appreciate proper punctuation though. Style of writing doesn't matter, write it like you speak.
Montana Pike Hunter, Leigh and Bustednuckles in particular, would you be interested in a guest post or two, especially on the contents of your comment? Please contact me.

Fishing preps

So I'm wondering how many of you have fishing gear in your preps? I'm not talking about your little 2 foot Mighty Mite fishing rod and reel (although that's a start) or 25 feet of line and a couple of hooks, I'm talking about some serious fishing gear. Level wind reels, decent size spinning reels, various rods of different weight, lures, different types of hooks, lines of different weights for different applications? How about seining nets, gill nets, or even crawdad traps?

You don't have to have top of the line gear, but species specific gear can be a great help - you're not going to catch trout out of a clear mountain stream using 20 pound test line and you're not going to catch many bass or catfish on ultra-light trout gear.

Fish is a great source of protein and are abundant. You would be surprised at where you can catch fish - I've got decent size trout out of streams I was straddling. Plus you have to consider that if shit gets really serious, large wild game in the US will be virtually extinct within a few years with everybody in the country shooting everything they can.

I think I'm going to do a few posts here in the near future for the folks that don't know how to fish. Do you think it'll be worth my while? Is there anybody out there that might be interested in doing a guest post on the various netting techniques? I'm pretty ignorant on that end.
Comments, please.

Awww, you poor things.

Automatic federal cuts are bringing staffers to the brink of starvation, suggested Debbie Wasserman Schultz, at a recent House Legislative Branch Appropriations Subcommittee hearing.
Restaurants on the House side of Congress are increasing in cost so much that aides are being “priced out” of a good meal, she said, as Fox News reported. The comments came by way of a discussion about the impacts of the sequester on lawmakers’ office budgets. Rep. Jim Moran said he may be forced to lay off a staffer — and then Ms. Wasserman Schultz weighed in with her tale of hard times.
Just to clarify: An 8-ounce bowl of Ham and Bean soup at the Cannon Office Building’s carry-out café costs $2. A gourmet wrap or sliced bread sandwich sells for about $5. And in the Longworth Building’s sit-down cafeteria, a serving of stuffed chicken, asparagus and mashed potatoes sells for about $7, Fox News finds.
Meanwhile, Ms. Wasserman Schultz’s staffers earn between $60,000 and $160,000 per year, Fox News reports.

Good. I'm glad. Now the fucking feds are finding out how the rest of the country feels. I haven't been able to eat at a fine restaurant quite some time now.

Old school

Not sure what's stranger about this - the guy skiing behind a horse or the babe in the bikini in the snow.

YOU'RE making fun of HER???

Gotta get the last word in, huh?

The Whiney Li'l Bitch and his knife

Well, the Whiney Li'l Bitch got his knife today, the one I posted about HERE last week, after being off for about 10 days due to one of his many ailments and hurts and pains.
That sonofabitch opened it up, took a double take at the blade and his jaw dropped as everybody around him started laughing.
I figured I could outrun him with him being all crippled up, but what I didn't think about was how fast that motherfucker could lunge - damned near laid my Carhartt open, missed me by about 2 inches.
"You know I ain't paying you for this, right? I want my money back" I told him no problem, it was well worth his reaction.
He came up a little later and finally saw the humor in it and told me, "Well, at least I got something to remember you by when the feds shoot you to doll rags."
Shit, I figured my memory would be enough. But I'm still watching my back around him for a while.

Just couldn't resist, could you?

All right! Break time!!!

Awwww, Mom would be SO proud!!!

You gotta be old like me to get this

Just in time for the 70 degree weather......
Fuck all you doubters.

Gotta make it count, man.

See what I miss by not being on welfare?

Don't tell me that welfare recipients aren't innovative! Why stand and wait to get your welfare check? Just put your flip-flops next in line and then sit on your ass and play games on your ObamaPhone till your name is called!

The Swapshop on FB

Okay, the Swapshop has been up for 2-3 weeks now and I haven't even made my money back on what it cost to launch the page, a whopping 50 bucks.
I told Lisa last night that I was going to leave it for the year that I've paid and then I wasn't going to waste my time with it anymore and her reply was to put it on FB which got an immediate response of OH HELL NO. I wanted this shit to remain with Patriots and then she gently reminded me that I've got damned few friends and the ones that I do have are as whacked out as I am as far as politics go and any exposure is good exposure.
Good point.
So here it is for all you facebookies: The Patriot Swapshop on FB
If you can't see it, send me a friend request HERE

Why you should always let a woman speak first

He had to have known, man.

I was working with Greg The Whiney Li'l Bitch a couple weeks ago and pulled out my knife to cut some shrink wrap. I unzipped that shit in just a flash and Greg says "Damn, that knife is sharp. Let me see it."
I handed it over and he admired it and asked where I got it. I told him I got it at Two Point Enterprises.
"Yeah? Can you get me one?"
My mind was already turning. "You bet. You want the blade laser engraved with your name or something for another 5 bucks?"
"Yeah, that would be cooler than shit! Put my last name on it." He hands me $25 bucks and it's a done deal.

Well, today I got the knife in the mail. I wonder if he's gonna like it.

Huh. This is cool.

Yeah, that's a pretty good indication. Fire and brimstone next.

Don't ask if you don't wanna know

Teacher asks the kids in class: "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

Little Johnny: "I wanna be a billionaire, going to the most expensive clubs, take the best bitch with me, give her a Ferrari worth over a million bucks, an apartment in Copacabana, a mansion in Paris, a jet to travel through Europe , an Infinite Visa Card and to fuck her three times a day".

The teacher, shocked, and not knowing what to do with the bad behavior of the child, ignores him and continues the lesson.
"And you, Susie? What to you want to be when you grow up?"

"I wanna be Johnny's bitch!"

Milfy Monday - Swimsuit Edition

I had a dog named Motherfucker once. Well, it wasn't my dog, it came with the property so I never knew what it's real name was but when I said "C'mere, motherfucker" it would come. Never really saw the sense in naming the motherfucker if I didn't need to, you know?
He was a pretty good dog, I never did pin down his parentage but he was medium sized, maybe 60-70 pounds, shorthaired, only had one ear left and probably fawn colored if I could've ever caught him long enough for a bath. Didn't have a tail either, not even a stub.
I only saw him maybe once a week and he got along great with the yard dogs but he was a semi feral dog, slept in the fields and pretty much fed himself. About the only time he'd come to get a meal was during hard rains in the winter and the hunting sucked. The rest of the time Motherfucker was just out and about. But during the summer? Maybe once a week. I'd hear the yard dogs get excited and Motherfucker would come trotting in and start playing with them, or maybe I'd look out in the yard and he'd be napping with the others under the cottonwoods.
I don't know how old he was when I got there but he was a full grown dog and when I left 7 or 8 years later he looked exactly the same.
Yeah, I left him there when I moved into town. Motherfucker wasn't around moving day and I didn't think I could keep the motherfucker fenced in anyways.
I did see him a year or so later when I was driving down the road a couple miles past the old property. I seen him trotting along a canal bank so when I got to the spot where the road went over the canal I pulled over and waited on the tailgate for a couple minutes and pretty soon, here he comes trotting down the canal bank. " Hey motherfucker, what's up?" I said as he got within 10 feet, glad to see he was still alive and doing well.
Motherfucker trotted right on past me like I wasn't even there. Did not even acknowledge my presence.

Some artsy shit to show my soft sensitive side

It was either a waterfall or a hot babe, man. I went with the babe.

The only other classy picture I could come up with was this:

It's not easy coming up with shit that's pleasing to both the men and babe readers here, you know. I mean, if it gets too gay the guys just blow right over it hoping for a camel toe and this is pretty much a male oriented blog so I can't be having that shit. But I do have babe readers and I don't want them to feel left out but goddamn, try googling classy babe artsy shit sometime. I don't remember what search engine I got it off of but when I entered that I got this:

While it is more in line with this blog, it ain't quite what I had in mind. So I went to the second page of the search engine - you know you're fucking desperate when you go to page 2 of a search engine. I got this: a listing to a female escort page in the Brooklyn Backpage where I lost a couple of hours looking through all those ads for classy artsy babe pics. Never did find any although I've come to the conclusion that there ain't a whole lot of white folks in Brooklyn. Or maybe it's just white hookers.

Then I got to thinking that hey! it don't have to be classy artsy babe pics, guys can look at shit that ain't got tits so I went to my picdump folder looking for something just plain artsy. I done used up all my Northern Lights pictures, I don't do sunsets, moon pictures remind me of islam and so I don't have none of those either. The only nature pics I held onto had coyotes in all of them and you saw those last month.
Fuck. This is harder than I thought it was gonna be. And then I ran across this. This is pretty cool. It's got a naked babe in the for the guys yet the babe readership will be happy because there ain't no real titty showing and there's a wolf or something in there.

Miss Lisa sent me this a couple of weeks ago. She sent the email and then told me "I sent you something. It will look nice on your blog."
Oh it will, will it? Yes ma'am. Only problem was I couldn't figure out how to post it without looking all sissy and shit so it just sat there in my picdumps. I figured I'd use it somewhere but just didn't know where.
Consider it used.

Okay. I got the artsy shit out of the way. No more of that for awhile unless I run across something that cool enough to post. I damned sure ain't gonna go looking for something. Now I can go do Milfy Monday. That takes me about 5 minutes - I got a special milf folder in my picdumps.

Hmmmm. Must be Wirecutter's bacon.

Reminds me of CharlieGodammit waiting for the mailman

Swamprat's new pistol

Read your post today about usin the "Slide Release" when putting in a new magazine...Duh...Sorry.
Always thought that was just common knowledge.  Guess not for every one though.
started packin a new "carry piece" a couple weeks ago.  Pretty incredible little pistol if ya read up on it.  The XDS in .45 ACP single stack.... from Springfield Armory.  7+1 or 5+1.
Also picked up the Crimson Trace Laser, especially made for the XDS.  First time I ever had a Laser.  Interesting little toy....don't know how long I will keep it on.
When putting in a new mag....STILL just use the slide release.  It's not as big as yours, but it works just fine.
Here's a couple picts, AND a Vid of the little sucker....I've never seen a .45.....ANY .45 let alone one with a 3.3" barrel, hit a Gong 4 out of 6 100 Yards!  Like I said.  Cool pistol Ken.  The guys a pretty damn good shot too.
