It's not like he needed that gun anymore

CHICAGO — New information has emerged about the shooting that left a man dead near a homeless encampment in the West Loop two weeks ago. Chicago police now believe that the man who died was involved in a shootout with at least one other person who was armed with a rifle. And, detectives learned, someone stole the dead man’s gun as he was lying unresponsive in the middle of Lake Street.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Replica to visit Russellville KY

RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. (WBKO) - The Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., will be visiting Russellville this summer through its official traveling exhibit called “The Wall that Heals.”

Russellville has been selected as one of the 33 host sites for the official traveling exhibit of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. The memorial, a 375-foot replica standing at 7.5 feet high, will unfold from a 53-foot trailer, providing a unique opportunity for the community to connect with the history of the Vietnam War.

*****

I remember when the Moving Wall came to Modesto, my dad called me up and asked if I'd take him to visit it. I said sure, no problem even though I thought it was strange he wanted me to take him instead of him driving himself. I asked what time, and he said 0300 the next day.
Three in the fucking morning? "Why so early?" I asked.
"Because I don't want to be around a bunch of kids and women when I go."
He wasn't the only one. We got there and there must've been 100 older men, no kids and only a handful of women standing respectfully off to the side while their men remembered and wept.

Biden plans to ban logging in US old-growth forests in 2025

Joe Biden’s administration on Tuesday announced a new proposal aimed at banning logging in old-growth forests, a move meant to protect millions of trees that play a key role in fighting the climate crisis.

The proposal comes from an executive order signed by the president on Earth Day in 2022 that directed the US Forest Service and the land management bureau to conduct an inventory of old-growth and mature forest groves as well as to develop policies that protect them.

The NRA Is at Rock Bottom—And 15 Years of Tax Filings Tell the Story

Few political groups in U.S. history have seen a collapse as swift and dramatic as the National Rifle Association.

Over the last several years, the NRA has experienced a public implosion, as the group loses members and revenue amid serious accusations of mismanagement and corruption. And according to the latest NRA tax returns obtained by The Daily Beast, the reputational and organizational damage is rolling on with seemingly no end in sight.

I can remember a time when it seemed like damned near every pickup truck was proudly sporting an NRA sticker. Now you rarely see one and if you do, it's driven by some guy older than Methuselah.

A couple years ago I read about a gun club opening up a new members-only rifle range on Hwy 10 between here and Hartsville, and they were taking applications to join. I really, really wanted to shoot there, so I shot them an email asking for an application to join.
A couple weeks later I got an email from them saying a spot had opened up and 'here's your application, complete it and return it along with your initiation fee, first year's dues, and proof of active membership in the NRA'.
I emailed them back thanking them for their time and consideration but there was no way in hell I would join any organization that would bargain my 2A Rights away just to use a rifle range.
I never heard a word back.

Underestimating Washington D.C.'s Debt Trap

In May this year, the Congressional Budget Office estimated outstanding US government debt next October to be $27,388 billion. By the end of the first quarter of the fiscal year, it will exceed $34,000 billion. It is soaring out of control, and perhaps it is not surprising that the CBO has not updated its forecasts with this debt uncertainty. The CBO also assumed that debt interest costs last year would be $663 billion, when it ended up being $980 billion 48% higher than forecast. For the current fiscal year, the CBO assumed that the average interest cost on debt held by the public would be only 2.9%. Short-term T-bill financing upon which the Treasury has become overly dependent is almost double that.

VDH Commentary: Partisan Lawfare’s Attempt to Destroy Trump

Trump Derangement Syndrome became Orwellian with the recent ruling of the Colorado Supreme Court.

It approved the erasure of Trump from the Republican primary ballot in Colorado, by invoking Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

That ossified clause was intended to bar any ante-bellum federal officials who joined the Confederacy from again holding federal offices after 1865.

In no way is Trump’s conduct on January 6 comparable to calling for secession, much less prompting a Civil War that cost the country 700,000 lives.

The Blizzard of 1978

It was the worst storm to ever hit northwest Ohio. Between January 26 and January 29, 1978, 12 inches of snow fell on the sleepy towns of northwest Ohio. But it wasn't the accumulation that was a problem. Winds gusted at 60 miles per hour, and the temperature dropped to around 11 degrees. The Blizzard of '78 chronicles how countless lives were disrupted and how some were lost.

The storm caught many residents off guard. The night before it started many people thought of the incoming storm as just another winter disturbance - certainly nothing to worry about. But upon awaking the next morning, it was all too apparent, this was not a typical storm.

Gas, electric, and telephone service was lost in many areas and the storm was preventing city and utility workers from getting service restored. People fought for anything and everything to stay warm; some even tore apart and burned furniture in their effort to have some heat. Some people suffered carbon monoxide poisoning by using outdoor grills indoors for heat.

As is ofter the case, amid the horrific conditions, there are tales of heroism and humor along with the tragedy. The Blizzard of '78 tells these stories through firsthand accounts, home movies and archival photographs.

Using this platform, I've come to find out there's not much I can do except bitch and complain to Blogger which obviously does no good.

This morning I got an email from Dakota Viking outlining something that helped him.

Hey there,
Your Blog is a daily read (ok 5 days... close enough). I've commented infrequently over the years, but I have noticed over the past few weeks (months?) several times got "your comment failed to publish try again later" (or something close) once or twice one slipped in with the normal "will be published after moderation". While trying to decide whether to mash on the "publish" button for the third time this morning, I pondered the "sign in with google" prompt in comments. My default search engine is yahoo (I don't know why), so I changed it to google... Well S.O.B. "will be published after moderation" popped right up. Didn't sign in, just switched search engines... Throwing the info out there in case there are other pieces to a puzzle.

Commentary: Government Cannot Become Big Brother

Anyone who lived through 2020 observed that some messages received treatment online that stood in stark contrast to other messages. Conservative voices and messages were censored and banned, while progressive voices and messages flowed freely. If a person spoke against COVID-19 lockdowns—and later vaccines—there was a good chance that a social media platform would take down the post. If one were to suggest that suspicious activities occurred surrounding the 2020 election, the label “misinformation” might appear.

Vanderbilt poll shows bipartisan support for gun reform among Tennesseans

(WKRN) — A new poll conducted by Vanderbilt University shows that most Tennesseans — whether Democrat or Republican — support gun reform, despite very little legislation being passed by state lawmakers.

A team of researchers at the university conducts statewide surveys at least twice a year to uncover what Tennesseans think about important public policy issues, with the focus of the Fall 2023 poll being on abortion, education, gun reform and state politics.

*****

Horseshit. The reason very little legislation was passed to support gun control is because the lawmakers outside of blue cities know if they do pass it, their asses are serving their last terms. That's how much Tennesseans support gun 'reform'.
